A trailer teaser for Pacific Rim Uprising has released ahead of the movie's first official trailer debut tomorrow. Steven S. DeKnight's (Daredevil, Spartacus) upcoming sequel takes place several years after the events of Guillermo del Toro's original monster mash film, Pacific Rim, yet comes five years after the first movie hit theaters in 2013. It was originally supposed to helmed by del Toro himself, who also planned an animated series that would expound upon the franchise's characters and history, as well as bridge the two films together.
Unfortunately, plans for the animated series ended up falling through when del Toro exited the sequel, and so DeKnight was brought onboard to continue the Jaeger vs Kaiju story - which now sees Star Wars lead John Boyega playing the main character, Jake Pentecost, the grown-up son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost from the first film. Although the Jaegers managed to close the breach in the first movie, the Kaiju have found another way back. And this time, they are prepared for an all-out war with Earth.
Legendary and Universal Pictures opted to skip San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year in favor of promoting the highly-anticipated Pacific Rim sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, at New York Comic Con this weekend. The first trailer is expected to debut sometime tomorrow, and to hype up the impending release, the studios have released a short, 7-second teaser. You can watch the trailer teaser in the section above.
The short video features moments that were revealed in the first Uprising images, primarily showcasing Boyega's Pentecost and his Jaeger, Gipsy Avenger (co-piloted by Scott Eastwood's Nate Lambert) - an upgraded version of the first film's main Jaeger, Gipsy Danger, piloted by Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Becket and Rinko Kikuchi's Mako Mori. Unfortunately, Hunnam wasn't able to return for the sequel, due to scheduling conflicts with Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Michael Noer's Papillon. However, Kikuchi was rumored to appear in the film, and thanks to the Pacific Rim Uprising synopsis reveal, her character, Mako, has been confirmed for the sequel. It turns out, her participation in defending Earth in the original film has earned her an entire company of new pilots to command.
At this point, though, there's still quite a bit that we don't know about the upcoming sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters in March of 2018. Hopefully, tomorrow's official trailer debut will shed some light on the events of Pacific Rim Uprising, as well as what happened in the time between the sequel and del Toro's original film.
