The first synopsis for Universal and Legendary Pictures' sequel Pacific Rim Uprising teases the Jaeger's next battle to save Earth and the pilots who will be in command. Creative mastermind Guillermo Del Toro helped launch a new franchise a few years back with the release of Pacific Rim, a robot fighting monster epic. Even though the film had a lukewarm reception stateside, the international box office propelled the film forward to warrant a sequel.
While fans of the first can expect even more Jaeger vs Kaiju action, the sequel received some major changes from the start. Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is directing Uprising and has Star Wars star John Boyega attached to lead, as he plays the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Thanks to the film's first synopsis, we finally have some character details for him and a tease of the threat at hand.
Legendary and Universal revealed the first synopsis for Pacific Rim Uprising just before the first trailer arrives at New York Comic Con this weekend. There are plenty of details to unpack from the information relayed in the synopsis, but it is clear they are hoping that a bigger film, scale, and cast will provide an even greater punch.
The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.
Having the son of the great leader that was Stacker Pentecost wind up in the criminal system instantly puts Jake in a role where he can rise to the challenge of living up to his father's legacy. How well he is able to do that remains to be seen, but it's likely he'll prove worthy to carry on the Pentecost name. That said, it does add another level of intrigue that it will be his sister Mako who recruits him. The synopsis makes it clear they aren't the closest siblings and could even have a rivalry of sorts.
This synopsis also is the first chance to learn a bit about some of the other pilots, and even their recruiting process. It appears as though Mako is looking for all the help she can get in fighting the latest threat, which brings in her brother, as well as more new faces. Scott Eastwood's Lambert and Cailee Spaeny's Amara are the two additions that get some character details here, too. A core group involving a brother and sister, Jake's rival, and a hacker should provide an interesting dynamic for DeKnight to play with when robots aren't fighting monsters. But, with more details now made known, the anticipation for the trailer will only continue to grow.
