Pacific Rim Uprising wants to know if fans are ready to join the Jaeger Academy and take on the kaiju threat. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro original will follow Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) as he is faced with the legacy of his father Stacker (Idris Elba). It's not easy living up to the man who canceled the apocalypse. The first Pacific Rim has become a cult classic, telling the story of the kaiju monsters that attack humanity and the brave men and women who built and piloted jaegers to stop them.
All eyes have been on the new jaegers featured in the film, with the more recent Uprising poster showing the monster killers ready for battle. Jaeger means "hunter" in German and these look more than up for the task. The new jaegers, with names like the familiar Gypsy Avenger (the successor to Gypsy Danger from the original film), Bracer Phoenix, Guardian Bravo, Titan Redeemer, Saber Athena, and Scrapper (a one person jaeger built by newcomer Cailee Spaeny) are even bigger and more powerful than the originals, and ready to take on an even larger kaiju threat.
Now fans can get in on the fun and build their own jaegers. The official Twitter page for Pacific Rim Uprising released an enlistment video (seen below) asking fans to join the Jaeger Academy. On the Jaeger Academy website, fans can build and customize their own jaeger, complete with a cool name and a number of weapons. There is also daily trivia to test your knowledge of both Pacific Rim films that can earn you points which will help unlock exclusive content from Uprising. The coming soon section of the website promises a "precision and judgement" section as well as a "compatibility test". Hopefully, this means fans will also be able to find out who they are best suited to co-pilot their jager with.
Thanks to all who participated in the Hall of Heroes contest! Winners will be announced in March. Ready for the next challenge? Enlist at https://t.co/mJ43fBot8X now. #JaegerAcademy #PacificRimUprising pic.twitter.com/flSJ8SO0mZ— Pacific Rim (@PacificRim) January 31, 2018
In the original Pacific Rim, the Jaeger Academy was created by the Pan Pacific Defense Corps to train new pilots. Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and his brother Yancy (Diego Klattenhoff) both attended Jaeger Academy. Stacker Pentecost also served as a teacher at the Academy after he retired from piloting his own jaeger.
Marketing campaigns for films are finding increasingly creative ways to get fans not just talking about the film, but actively involved in playing along. Making a competition to unlock clues is a surefire way to get fans visiting a site daily to earn points and participate in games. Plus, it's a great way to continue the innovative and complex world building of the franchise by allowing fans to put themselves in the movie.
