As a second season of the anime series continues development at Netflix, Warner Bros. re-releases the trailer for Pacific Rim in 4K. Directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by Travis Beacham and del Toro on a story conceived by the former, the film is set in a future in which Earth has been invaded by colossal sea monsters known as Kaiju from an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The best scientific minds come together to create the Jaegers, large humanoid mechas co-piloted by two people joined by mental link who fight to defend the world from the destruction-bringing creatures.

The ensemble cast for Pacific Rim included Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini and Ron Perlman. Hitting theaters in 2013, the film scored generally positive reviews for its visuals, action sequences and homages to the kaiju, mecha and anime genres and would become del Toro's most commercially successful film to date with over $411 million grossed against its $200 million budget. This success would see production company Legendary Pictures would partner with Universal Pictures for a sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, which was considered a critical and commercial disappointment, and Netflix for the anime series Pacific Rim: The Black.

On the heels of re-releasing trailers for The Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros. has re-released the trailer for Pacific Rim in 4K. The new video features all of the mecha and kaiju action in visually crisp glory, from every little detail of the Jaeger suits to the continuous downpour of rain featured throughout the film. Unlike the re-release of the Dark Knight trailers, the up-resed trailer for Pacific Rim seems to be coming out of nowhere for fans of the film. Del Toro confirmed as recently as February that no plans were in the works for a third film in the franchise and the anime series just premiered in March with no premiere date for season 2. That being said, the sudden arrival of the 4K trailer is sure to please fans nonetheless and could see the studio gauge interest in a new 4K Ultra-HD physical release of the film, the last of which hit shelves five years ago.

While the film franchise around it has seemingly crumbled following the disappointment that was the 2018 sequel, del Toro's original Pacific Rim has continued to be an interesting outlier amongst fans of the Oscar-winning filmmaker. The general consensus still remains positive for the sci-fi action film, though many in said group continue to debate its position against his other blockbuster projects as well as his more arthouse fare. Whichever side of the coin one falls on, it's hard to deny the sheer escapist thrills del Toro delivered with the 2013 hit.
