John Boyega promises that audiences should get their "popcorn nice and warm" when they go to see next year's Pacific Rim Uprising. The film is the sequel to writer/director Guillermo del Toro's 2013 summer blockbuster Pacific Rim. However, Uprising has swapped out most of the cast of the original film with a lineup of new, exciting up-and-coming actors - including Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Adria Arjona, and more - and much to the surprise of most Pacific Rim fans, will not be directed by del Toro. Instead, Daredevil season 1 showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight, will be making his feature directorial debut with Uprising, after several years of proving himself behind-the-camera on TV.

Taking the same basic premise and style of the first film, Pacific Rim Uprising picks up a decade after the events of its predecessor in the year 2030. And while most plot details are still being kept under wraps, it has been confirmed that the sequel will follow Boyega as Jake Pentecost - the son of Idris Elba's Stacker from the 2013 film - as he finds himself in the same kind of Jaeger-Kaiju fights that his father fought so bravely in before him.

While Boyega refrained from revealing any story details for the film, the actor did take a moment to express his excitement about the huge scale and fun tone of Pacific Rim Uprising, during an interview with EW:

“It’s going to be so cool. This is a fun movie. It’s there to entertain. It’s larger than life. Just go in there looking to have a great time. Get you popcorn nice and warm. Your eyes are going to be peeled. We’ve got a spectacle and [Guillermo] del Toro’s influence is still there. It’s going to be really, really cool.”

While some fans may have been hesitant about getting excited for a Pacific Rim sequel not directed by Guillermo del Toro - especially after the filmmaker spent several years trying to get Uprising greenlit, the excitement surrounding the film has been steadily building over the past year or so. Not only has del Toro come out and publicly praised DeKnight as the film's director, but original cast member, Charlie Day (who will be returning for the sequel), has shared some similar statements about DeKnight and the film's cast, after working on the film himself.

Fans just got their first real look at Pacific Rim Uprising a few weeks ago, when a small teaser for the film was released in conjunction with this year's San Diego Comic-Con. However, the studio has been surprisingly withholding about releasing any official promotional materials or footage from the film - something that Boyega himself has even poked fun at. But with the film set to hit theaters next February, fans will, hopefully, only have to wait a little longer before a full trailer and some real, substantial footage from Pacific Rim Uprising is finally released.
