Pacific Rim: Uprising will feature a new generation of jaegers, including Gipsy Avenger - for which detailed designs have surfaced online. The film is a followup to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 Pacific Rim, which depicted a future world overrun by kaiju aliens that traveled to Earth by way of an interdimensional portal located at the bottom of the ocean. Introducing an interesting sci-fi concept, Pacific Rim's future featured massive robots called jaegers that were operated by teams of co-pilots and used to fight the kaiju. However when it seemed Earth was threatened of being overrun by the kaiju, the jaeger pilots led one last mission to close the portal - and they were successful.

In 2013, Pacific Rim received largely positive reviews, but didn't perform quite as well at the box office as Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros were hoping - earning only $101 million in the U.S. However, Pacific Rim performed exponentially better overseas, with its foreign box office totaling $309 million. So, although it took some time to get the green light, Legendary is moving forward with Pacific Rim: Uprising, which will introduce a new generation of jaegers to the futuristic sci-fi world created by del Toro. Now, a new look at one of the main three jaegers has surfaced online.

As reported by figsoku.net [via pacificrim2-movie.com], photos of a Pacific Rim: Uprising tie-in jaeger figure display were taken at the Tamashii Nations event in New York City this weekend. The display features the new jaeger Gipsy Avenger - no doubt taking a cue from Pacific Rim's Gipsy Danger for its name. Based on the poster that's part of the display, Gipsy Avenger is a Mark VI Jaeger with upgraded capabilities that include "Elbow Rocket 2.0," "Chain Sword 2.0," and "Airborne Launch System." Take a look at the images below:

Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen glimpses of what the Pacific Rim: Uprising jaegers will look like - concept art for the Pacific Rim sequel teased three new jaegers (and based on the similar designs, it looks like Gipsy Avenger is the lead of the three). However, the Gipsy Avenger display reveals exactly what this particular jaeger will be capable of, and while it largely seems to be an upgraded version of Gipsy Danger, this new machine will apparently be able to fly - if the Airborne Launch System is any indication.

It has yet to be confirmed which characters will be piloting Gipsy Avenger, but it will most likely be Pacific Rim: Uprising's new leads - John Boyega as Jake Pentecost (the son of Pacific Rim's Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba) and Scott Eastwood as Nate Lambert. In addition to those played by Boyega and Eastwood, Uprising will feature new characters played by Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Nick Tarabay, and Zhang Jin. Set to return from Pacific Rim are Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, Charlie Day as Newt Geiszler and Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb. Original star Charlie Hunnam didn't return for Pacific Rim: Uprising due to scheduling conflicts, and del Toro additionally stepped down as director, with Daredevil's Steven S. DeKnight taking the reigns.

Of course, with there still being 10 months left before Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters, and filming only having wrapped last month, it will likely be some time before Legendary releases any footage from the upcoming sequel. That said, these new images of Gipsy Avenger do offer fans an idea of what to expect from the new generation of jaegers, and work to generate buzz for the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel. If these Gipsy Avenger images are anything to go by, it seems Pacific Rim: Uprising will maintain the spirit of Pacific Rim while offering a fresh new take on the sci-fi world.
