Expanding on the story from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, director Steven S. DeKnight continues the franchise with Pacific Rim Uprising, but does it set the stage for further series installments with an end-credits scene?

In 2013, Pacific Rim hit theaters to mixed reviews and went on to an underwhelming performance at the domestic box office. However, del Toro's film about massive robots called Jaegers piloted by "Drift compatible" partners inspired a dedicated fan base. That, along with a much more impressive international box office haul, earned Pacific Rim a sequel. While del Toro and star Charlie Hunnam didn't return for the followup, director Steven S. DeKnight took up the reins for Pacific Rim Uprising. Now that the sequel continues the story started by del Toro, we reveal whether Pacific Rim Uprising has an end-credits scene further setting up a larger franchise.

While the Pacific Rim sequel expands on the mythology of the Jaegers and the Kaiju that traveled through the breach to terrorize Earth, Pacific Rim Uprising does not have an end-credits scene teasing what's to come in the franchise. However, the sequel DOES have a button scene placed just before the credits start to roll. When the main action of Pacific Rim Uprising concludes, a title card appears on screen, but don't start to leave just yet because there's an additional scene following that title card.

The scene isn't completely necessary to the overall story of Pacific Rim Uprising, as the main plot of the film does wrap up before the title card appears. However, the scene does continue one specific story thread that's explored over the course of the movie, and the button scene is undoubtedly a tease for a potential third Pacific Rim movie. In fact, the scene pretty explicitly states what a third entry in the series would be if the franchise is continued. So, if you're interested in where the surviving heroes of Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim Uprising could go in a third movie, it's necessary to keep paying attention even if the sequel seems to be over.

It's curious that Uprising chose to include the scene before the credits. Post-credits scenes have been on the rise since they were made incredibly popular by Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel has made its button scenes necessary viewing for fans of the franchise, and they add to the event-like nature of the studio's releases. Now, it's common for all kinds of movies and franchises to include something for fans who have stuck around through the credits. Of course, while it's always good to watch the credits to get an idea of who helped make a film, post-credits scenes are a fun part of modern moviegoing. Pacific Rim Uprising, however, put what seems like could have been a button scene prior to the credits.
