Ozark: 5 Moments Marty Byrde Was A Genius (And 5 He Wasn't)

Ozark has been compared to Breaking Bad at times but despite sharing similar themes, it carves its own path quite perfectly. The series also has a string of fascinating characters who all prefer doing bad deeds than good ones. Here is the worst thing each main character has done on the show.

Wendy: Cheating On Marty

Ozark Season 3 Byrdes

The pilot began with a heartbroken Marty watching Wendy's sex tape on his computer while talking to clients. He just couldn't understand what made her cheat after 22 years of marriage. Marty even confessed that he also had a few chances to cheat but didn't do it out of respect for Wendy.

Wendy had cheated with a man named Gary "Sugarwood" Silverberg and Marty had found out after hiring a private investigator. Wendy even planned to flee with Gary but the cartel intervened and took care of the issue after Marty agreed to launder money for them.

Hellen: Ordering A Hit On Wendy's Bipolar Brother

Ben points in Ozark

Tom Pelphrey gave an outstanding performance as Wendy's younger brother Ben Davis in Season 3. Everything was going well for Ben until he fell in love with Ruth. The medications he normally took for his bipolar disorder were preventing him from performing well in bed so he ditched them. This was a bad idea was he ended up doing on a downward spiral mentally.

He went on to tell Hellen's daughter that her mother was a drug dealer. Hellen got angry and ordered a hit on Ben, despite knowing his condition. Ben even called Hellen behind Wendy's back to apologize but she didn't change her mind. She still let him get killed.

Darlene: Poisoning Her Husband Jacob

In Season 2’s penultimate episode, the ever-evil poppy farmer Darlene topped all her previous bad deads by putting cyanide in her husband Jacob's coffee. The two had disagreed over the big casino that was being constructed on their land. Darlene was also paranoid and felt he'd kill her.

Jacob died while he's with Darlene in the woods. She went on to give him the kind of reassurance that only people like give: “It’ll be quick, I promise.” It was indeed quick, and Jacob, realizing what his wife had done to him said: “I never could keep up with you, Darlene.”

Sue: Accepting Bribes From Both Martyr And Wendy

Marty and Wendy's marriage was going south very quickly so Charlotte suggested they seek professional help. They agreed to this and started seeing the local therapist Sue Shelby. Everything would be great now, right? Not at all. Their marriage deteriorated even further. Marty frequently bribed Sue so that she would favor him during the therapy sessions. This was initially working but then Sue accepted a bribe from Wendy too.

She ended up getting confused during the next therapy session, wondering who to root for. This led her to tell the couple that both of them bribed her. Marty and Wendy then began arguing and accidentally spilled cartel details in Sue's presence. As a result, she blackmailed them and bought a Mclaren. This was a bad move that forced Hellen to order a hit on her.

Marty: Ruining Pastor Mason Young's Life... And Eventually Killing Him

Ozark Season 3 Marty Casino

Pastor Mason Young's life was peaceful until Marty came up with the idea of building a church for him in order to launder money through it. Previously, Mason was preaching to his congregation via a boat on the lake. Darlene and Jacob didn't like the church idea since they normally used hymn books given to the congregation on the lake to smuggle their drugs.

They kidnapped Marty and forced him to stop the project or else they'd kill Mason's wife Grace and cut the unborn baby out of her womb. Mason freaked out upon learning about the drug trade, forcing Darlene and Jacob to kill his wife and cut the baby out. Mason then lost it and kidnapped Wendy. In an effort to save her, Marty killed Mason.

Sheriff Nix: Facilitating Ben's Release From The Psychiatric Hospital

Del: Throwing Wendy's Lover Out Of A Skyscraper

Del looking at Marty in Ozark.

Del was the first member of the Navarro cartel to appear on the show. In the pilot episode, he killed all of Marty's colleagues for stealing money from the cartel. Marty convinced Dell to spare him by offering to launder money for the cartel in Missouri where there were fewer feds.

Meanwhile, Wendy's secret lover Gary "Sugarwood" Silverberg convinced her to leave Marty and flee with him. Since Del wanted Marty's family to stick together, he caught up with Gary and threw him out of the window of a skyscraper just before Marty arrived to confront him about sleeping with his wife.

Ruth: Trying To Electrocute Marty

Wendy in the casino in Ozark.

Marty has always been good to Ruth. He has trusted her enough to put her in charge of two of his businesses. However, Ruth was in a "blood over water" kind of dilemma. Her father Cade Langmore who had just come out of prison was persuading her to kill Marty and take all his money.

She went on to wire Marty's dock, hoping to electrocute him. However, when Marty touched the metal, nothing really happened because FBI agent Petty knew what was about to happen and managed to undo the wiring. Petty wanted to bring down Ruth's uncle Russ Langmore and had seduced him in order to get information out of him. One of the things he heard from Russ was Ruth and Cade's plan to kill Martyr.

Frank Cosgrove Jr: Beating Up Ruth

Frank Jr argues with Wendy inside the casino in Ozark

Power star Joseph Sikora played Frank Cosgrove Jr, the son of mob boss Frank Cosgrove, in the third season of Ozark. Frank enjoyed playing at the casino but he and Ruth never got along. In the first episode, she even threw him into the lake.

The tensions between them almost reached a tragic end when Frank beat up Euth on a pavement, leaving her fighting for her life. Marty and Wendy refused to retaliate on Ruth's behalf since it would cause problems with the mob. Darlene, seeking to win Ruth's favor tracked down Frank and shot him in the groin area.

Omar Navarro: Murdering Hellen In Front Of Marty And Wendy

Ozark Season 3 Ending

Season 3's last episode was one of the best season finales in all of TV. Hellen became too ambitious and asked Navarro to let her take over the Byrde's businesses. She even got herself a casino license and lied to the FBI that Marty was willing to testify against the cartel.

Wendy had a feeling that Hellen was trying to overthrow them so she and Marty convinced Navarro that they could use the FBI to their advantage. Navarro ordered both Hellen, Wendy and Hellen to come and attend his child's baptism and as soon as they arrived, he had Wendy killed in an iconic moment that sent blood splattering all over Wendy and Marty's faces. This was unexpected because Hellen had always been a loyal asset to him.
