The showrunner of Ozark teases that the series might be getting a spinoff sooner than later. The series, which ran on Netflix for a total of four seasons, was created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams in 2017. The show centers on Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a suburban dad who moves his family to central Missouri to help expand his money laundering business. The series also stars Laura Linney as his political PR strategist wife Wendy, Sofia Hublitz as their daughter Charlotte, Skylar Gaertner as their son Jonah, and Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore, a young woman whose fate becomes intertwined with the Byrde family.

Ozark concluded its run with the release of part 2 of season 4 on April 29, 2022. The finale was described by director and star Bateman as "a happy ending — but they’re limping." In spite of this, the story seemed well and truly concluded by the time the closing credits scrolled - at least for the Byrde family. Since the conclusion of the show, though, many have wondered if a spinoff taking place in the Ozark universe could come to fruition.

TVLine had the opportunity to sit down with showrunner Chris Mundy following the release of the final set of episodes from Ozark. During the conversation, he teased that the season 4 finale might not be the last story there is to tell from the world of the series. While "there's nothing definitive," because of how popular the show is there's "some interest there." However, any show from this world likely wouldn't feature any of the major characters from the current series, because Mundy wanted their story to have a clear ending. Read his full quote below:

It’s definitely something that people have talked about a bunch. There’s nothing definitive. We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show so there’s obviously going to be some interest there.

There are still ways to stay inside the show and revisit things. It was really important for me to end this show. This is the work we did, we did our best and we hope people like it. And then anything that spins off from it would be its own distinct thing, even though it’s in our universe.

Jason Bateman and Laura Linney on Ozark

Even though the Byrde family and Ruth probably wouldn't appear in a potential Ozark spinoff, there is still plenty of material available for Netflix to mine. The spinoff could potentially focus on the other side of the operation, honing in on the stories of the Mexican drug cartel run by Feliz Solis' character Omar Navarro. It's also possible that the spinoff could track another side of the drug trade, either through Claire Shaw's pharmaceutical company or how the Navarro Cartel has effected other areas of the country.

Should Ozark get a spinoff, it would be part of a new precedent for Netflix. While the streaming giant is very interested in franchising with their original films, they typically weren't interested in creating new series that are in the same universe as their previous series after the collapse of their Defenders universe (which was a crossover between Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and other Marvel Netflix properties). However, with an impending Bridgerton series focusing on the life of Queen Charlotte and the recent release of their Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources, the table would certainly be set for a potential continuation of Ozark.
