Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ozark season 4, part 1

Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy teases story details for the show's final season 4, part 2. With Ozark season 1 released in 2017 on Netflix, the show has become one of the streamer's most popular and well-reviewed original series. Starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, the crime drama series follows financial planner Marty Byrde as he is forced to relocate his family to the Ozarks after finding himself embroiled in a money-laundering scheme for a dangerous Mexican drug cartel.

It was announced last year that Ozark would be ending with season 4, split into two seven-episode parts. Season 4, part 1, which landed on Netflix on January 21, picks up immediately following the shocking finale of Ozark season 3, which ended with Marty and his wife, Wendy, traveling to Mexico at the behest of ruthless drug lord Omar Navarro. Immediately upon arriving, Navarro shoots cartel lawyer Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) in front of Marty and Wendy, doubling down on his working relationship with the Byrde family for Ozark season 4.

Although Ozark season 4, part 1 was only just released, Mundy, in a new interview with THR, teases what is to come in Ozark's season 4, part 2. The showrunner promises that the second half will dig deeper into the Byrde family and the tumultuous relationship between Marty and Wendy. Ultimately, Mundy says, part 2 will bring finality and closure to the story of the Byrde family. Check out Mundy's full comment below:

"I always want closure. I don’t want to feel messed with. I want to feel like, “OK, that was the end.” So hopefully people will feel closure by the end — whether they like it or not, I don’t know. In terms of tone, we’re going deeper into the family and their bonds. Is family the ultimate bond? Is friendship? Is marriage? At what point is it almost unhealthy to stay, even if you love somebody? We’re going to delve into that with Marty and Wendy. Hopefully the back half will still be fun and exciting, but also really emotional for the Byrdes and Ruth."

The Byrde family stands outside and looks forward in Ozark

Marty and Wendy's introduction in Ozark season 1 shows audiences a marriage already plagued with infidelity, and the escalation of tensions between Marty and the drug cartel only exacerbated existing tensions between the pair. Over the course of the show, Marty and Wendy Byrde's marriage has essentially devolved into a business relationship maintained out of necessity and for the sake of their children, and Mundy's comments make clear that the pair's unique struggle will be further explored in the back half of Ozark season 4.

Ozark has always explored themes of family and marriage and Mundy's comments suggest that season 4, part 2 will dig even deeper into these areas. While Marty and Wendy have stayed with each other thus far, it's very possible that a breaking point will come in the back half of season 4, shattering the Byrde family irreparably. Whatever happens, though, Mundy makes clear that the Byrde saga will end with definitive closure, meaning there are likely more shocking deaths to come in Ozark season 4, part 2.
