While Baldur’s Gate 3 is in Early Access until at least October 6, 2021, players can spend their time making new connections with fantastical characters, party members, and even pets. So far there are two pets available for players to bring to their campsite. Players will want to make sure that they have high stats for animal handling, as they will have to convince their pets to come home with them willingly.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, players can befriend animal characters to spend time with at their camp. Players can choose a more realistic pet, Scratch the Dog, or a more fantasy-specific pet, an orphaned Owlbear Cub. It’s not as simple as picking out a pet from a list and paying for it, however. Players will have to find them and convince them to join the family before they can bond with these pets and gain their trust back at the camp. The Owlbear Cub will be the more difficult one to obtain, so follow the steps below to take it home.

Baldur's Gate 3 Owlbear Cub Dialogue

The Owlbear Cub’s location will be pretty easy to deduce. Located in the Owlbear Nest, the cub and its mother will be discovered early on in the game with the Gilded Chest of Selûne. If the mother is killed, the cub will eat the corpse of the mother, a pretty gruesome feat, and can be found later on in the game. If the player leaves the pair alone, they won’t be in the cave when the player returns to it.

Later on, when the player reaches the Goblin Camp, the Owlbear Cub will be found being chased by goblins in a game of “chicken chase” outside of the Shattered Sanctum. Speak to Krolla, the leader of the group, to wager some gold and chase the cub or tell her the practice is unethical. Keep in mind that even if the player wins, Krolla will refuse to give them their money back.

If players want to participate, they can walk to the pen and speak to the cub. Players will need to perform an Animal Handling skill check and convince the cub to follow them to the goalposts to help them win. Even if the player doesn’t succeed or chooses not to participate, they can speak to Krolla and let her know they wish to leave with the cub. She will be reluctant, as she wants to eat it, but she can be persuaded. They can use a variety of skills to convince her to comply, and, if successful, the cub will appear in the camp.

With the Owlbear Cub safe in camp, players can spend their downtime playing with it, and making it believe that they are actually eating the birds it catches for them. After a while, the cub will be ecstatic to see the player.
