A new video from Overwatch 2 developer Blizzard revealed extensive changes for Bastion's abilities in the upcoming title. Bastion is not on the list of Overwatch's most popular competitive-play heroes despite being a playable option since its initial release in 2016, and has seen relatively few major changes in the years since.

Bastion is a robot capable of transforming from a bipedal humanoid form into various shapes during combat, including a tank and a stationary sentry gun. In the original game, he was also capable of healing itself through its self-repair button mechanic. Most of these abilities will be changed or removed entirely in Overwatch 2 - and while Bastion is not the first Overwatch hero to have a rework revealed, it appears that he will have some decently extensive revisions .

In a new YouTube video from PlayOverwatch (via Game Informer), the changes to Bastion in Overwatch 2 are described in detail. Its self-repair ability is gone, replaced by a "projectile that can bounce off of walls" and stick to opposing players. Bastion will still be able to change into his powerful sentry mode, but only for eight seconds at a time and the ability will have a cooldown. However, Bastion will be able to move in sentry mode in Overwatch 2, although at a slower pace than his Recon form. His ultimate will also differ from the original Overwatch. Instead of a tank, Bastion will be able to shift to Artillery mode, where players can designate three zones on the map for detonating missiles.

Bastion's playstyle and visuals in Recon mode will also receive an update in the sequel. His gun will have a no spread and a reduced rate of fire, allowing him to attack from further distances. As with other Overwatch heroes, he will get a different look in the sequel, with an "updated and more modernized appearance," including a baseball cap to add "an extra touch of character." Ganymede, the canary that is always by Bastion's side, made the cut for his final Overwatch 2 design.

The status of this installment's development is a bit unclear, especially after it was announced that the game's Overwatch 2's executive producer departed from Blizzard this past week. However, the reveal of Bastion's rework is a sign that work on Overwatch 2 is still underway. While some might question whether the amount of content justifies an entirely new game, the changes to Bastion are a welcome indication that the developers are at least looking to ensure each playable hero has comparable (and competitive) abilities.
