Overwatch 2 is reportedly expected to release before summer 2022. Overwatch 2 has been in development for quite some time now, but Blizzard is remaining a bit quiet on when the game is supposed to release. There have been plenty of rumors suggesting the game could be released in 2023, but other sources are saying this isn't correct and that it'll make it out in time for next year.

Rumors previously suggested Overwatch 2 wouldn't release until 2023, as development is taking longer than expected. The rumor came from Metro, a known member of the Overwatch community who has leaked things in the past. Metro also suggested that Blizzard has halted any further work on the first game so all the attention and resources could be poured into the sequel. As of right now, there's no way of telling how true any of this is, but Dexerto is now reporting the opposite.

Dexerto claims a source at Activision Blizzard has confirmed the game will release by summer 2022. Blizzard has reportedly prioritized releasing Overwatch 2 ASAP and has allegedly been told to lock the features it currently has and finish polishing the game for a Q2 2022 release, which would place it around spring or summer. Since Overwatch is meant to have big innovations for the series, it's unclear if the game is actually ready or if it's being pushed out the door to meet a deadline. Another source also claimed the release will be appropriately timed as to not interfere with the Overwatch League schedule.

Regardless of whether or not it's fully ready, it seems like there are some people confident that Overwatch 2 will release in 2022. Activision doesn't seem keen on compromising on deadlines, as it reportedly gave Sledgehammer two years to hammer out a new Call of Duty game in time for 2021. Whether or not Blizzard has had the time it needs to fully flesh out the game and prevent it from just being an updated version of the first game remains to be seen.

Blizzard debuted some new looks for heroes in Overwatch 2 earlier this year, but some fans are skeptical that the developer is doing enough to justify a brand-new game. Since the PvP content will actually still be part of the first game and the meat of Overwatch 2 is PvE content, some think the game could've been a simple expansion. Blizzard is no stranger to giving games long-term support via expansions, so it might have been easier for the studio to meet its deadlines for Overwatch 2 under similar circumstances.
