A frame rate test conducted with Outriders shows that the demo's gameplay and cutscenes have more consistent frame rates on PlayStation 5, though the game arguably looks better on Xbox Series X. Outriders is the latest third-person shooter from People Can Fly, the development team behind Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgement.

Announced during E3 2019, the action title originally had a 2020 launch window. Three delays pushed Outriders to April 2021, but potential customers have plenty of time to try the experience in advance, courtesy of a free demo that's currently live across consoles and PC. The demo features a whole host of content, too, including all four classes and their respective six character slots. In terms of story, those who jump into the shooter's trial version can experience the prologue, opening chapter, and a select few side missions. Since the demo has been available for a number of days now, players are no doubt curious about how it performs on the recently released consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

Over the weekend, YouTube channel VG Tech conducted a frame rate test on the Outriders demo. The results are rather interesting, showing that performance-wise, the game runs best on PS5. On Sony's new hardware, the demo is often able to hold a consistent 60 FPS during gameplay, though it does dip into the high 50s on occasion. Meanwhile, cutscenes mostly maintain 30 FPS, but drop to 29 FPS every now and then. Frame rate on Xbox Series X is a bit less stable, vacillating between numbers in the high 50s during moment-to-moment gameplay. Outriders' cutscenes on the high-end Xbox system seem to regularly shift between running at 29 and 30 FPS. Similar to Cyberpunk 2077, Outriders' visuals are a different matter entirely. As VG Tech noted in the video's pinned comment, Xbox Series X's highest native resolution can hit 3456x1944; the lowest is approximately 2261x1272. PS5, on the other hand, has its highest native resolution sitting at around 3008x1692, with the lowest managing 2112x1188.

This seems to be the theme of the current console generation, thus far - frame rate performance is best on PlayStation 5, while Xbox Series X packs in the better overall visual quality. Whether or not this will remain the case as the generation wears on is anyone's guess at present.

The free demo has worked wonders for People Can Fly's latest game as a whole. Most notably, Outriders became a top 10 seller on Steam, thanks to the recent influx of preorders following the trial version's launch last week. It'll be interesting to see if the shooter can maintain this level of momentum once the full game goes live early next month.
