The characters on the hit STARZ fantasy romance, Outlander, based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon, offer a scintillating range, while the actors do them justice in almost every way. From the heroine Claire to the fascinating Master Raymond, every character is enthralling in their own way.

Although physical stature and height never matter when it comes down to brass tacks, it is intriguing how some actors manage to rise above their height and become larger than life, whereas others physically tower over the cast while pulling off amazing roles.

Rosie Day: 5-Foot-2

Mary Hawkins

The meek and docile Mary Hawkins, who practically came of age in front of Claire herself, was played by Rosie Day. Hawkins appeared in season 2 as a fragile young woman who was raped by the Duke of Sandringham's men and was then forced to marry Jack Randall in a shotgun wedding because she was pregnant with his dying brother's child.

Rosie Day is a tiny woman at 5-foot-2 inches, although her character rose above her height and stature when she killed the man she identified as her rapist, thus automatically growing up a few years.

Laura Donnelly: 5-Foot-3

Jenny and Claire

The feisty sister of Jamie, Jenny Fraser, is one of the most determined, empowered characters on the show. Jenny is strong and runs the family estate, along with her husband Ian, in Jamie's continual absence.

Laura Donelly cuts a formidable figure as Jenny, standing tall even with her considerably short stature. Donelly is 5-foot-3 inches tall, but she surely goes toe to toe with some of the other actors who are taller or larger in gait.

Nell Hudson: 5-Foot-4

Laoghaire talking in Outlander

A character fans love to hate is Laoghaire, the scheming young woman who was responsible for Claire having to go through the witch trial and almost getting burned at the stake. Two decades later, when Claire returned, she found Jamie married to Laoghaire, older now but still rather nasty.

Actress Nell Hudson, who plays Laoghaire, is 5-foot-4 inches tall, making her one of the shorter actresses on set.

Dominique Pinon: 5-Foot-5

Claire visits Raymond's apothecary in Outlander

Fans will recall the tiny Master Raymond who became Claire's friend, well-wisher, and ultimate savior in season 2. Raymond was the local apothecary and didn't mind dabbling in the dark arts every now and then.

French actor Dominique Pinon played the man who miraculously saved Claire's life when she was almost on her death bed with puerperal fever following her miscarriage. Pinon is 5-foot-5 inches in height.

Simon Callow: 5-Foot-7

Simon Callow and Sam Heughan

The despicable Duke of Sandringham, played by the amazing Simon Callow, was one such larger-than-life character on the show. The Duke was much hated by the fans brigade, but only because his character was conniving and amoral and caused Claire and Jamie a fair bit of grief.

Callow put his heart and soul into the role, although he was killed off in season 2 by none other than Murtagh. Simon Callow is 5-foot-7, making him one of the shorter actors among the cast.

Caitriona Balfe: 5-Foot-9.5

Black Jack Randall and Claire Fraser in an unsettling conversation.

Claire Fraser doesn't just stand tall in terms of her strength and character, but also in height. She goes almost shoulder to shoulder with Sam Heughan's Jamie, who is very tall indeed.

Actress Caitriona Balfe had a significant modeling career before she became the central protagonist in the STARZ romance. Balfe is probably the tallest female actor on set, at 5-foot-9.5 inches.

Tobias Menzies: 6-Foot-1

Menzies as Frank and BJR

Actor Tobias Menzies plays the double roles of the gentle Frank, Claire's 20th-century husband who, through no fault of his own, is doomed to tragedy, and the sadistic Black Jack Randall, 200 years in the past -- two men who couldn't be more different.

Menzies is 6-foot-1 inches in height. As one of the chief antagonists of the first two seasons, Menzies' height surely comes in handy as he tries to intimidate everyone around him.

Duncan Lacroix: 6-Foot-1.5

Murtagh waiting outside the hospital.

Duncan Lacroix's adorably grumpy Murtagh Fitzgibbons is of the most beloved characters on the show. The character was brought back for a better send-off in season 3 when he was among one of Jamie's cellmates in Ardsmuir Prison after the Battle of Culloden.

Lacroix is one of the tallest actors on set, standing at 6-foot-1.5 inches. Murtagh died a heartwrenching death in season 5, but he will stay in fans' hearts for a very long time.

Graham McTavish: 6-Foot-2

Jamie and Dougal talk at war camp.

The towering Dougal Mckenzie was one of the tallest actors among the cast, for as long as his character lasted. Graham McTavish played the Scottish Highlander with slightly questionable morals with alacrity and is sorely missed by fans.

McTavish is practically the same as Heughan in terms of height. His tall gait added to the character's wild nature and imposing quality. making Dougal a fan favorite.

Sam Heughan: 6-Foot-2

Sam Heughan as Jamie

Sam Heughan's height matches his character's towering presence. His swashbuckling Jamie stands at an impressive 6-foot-2 inches in height.

As the dashing 18th century warrior with whom Claire falls desperately in love, Jamie has to cut a remarkable figure, not just with his acting prowess but also in appearance. In a show where physicality plays a vital role as the Highlanders lead a rustic, weather-beaten life, Heughan's height is an added advantage to his character.
