Season 6 of Starz's hit period love story, Outlander, has finally begun airing its episodes after an excruciating two-year hiatus, much to the relief of its dedicated viewers. After Redditors endlessly speculating what will happen in season 6, audiences are finally able to enjoy seeing their favorite Outlander characters on the silver screen again.

The Scots and settlers of Outlander are known for having very strong personalities. Even the characters of the supporting cast are fan-favorites because of their intense likability and a strong sense of self. With the right circumstances, these individuals could be main characters in their own right.

Marsali

Marsali was off to a strong start on the show: she immediately showed strong hatred for Claire while simultaneously sharing an adorable love story with Fergus. After getting to know Claire's kind-heartedness and true bond with Jamie, Marsali and Claire have grown to be very close, largely because they share the same strong spirit and bravery.

Marsali was responsible for one of the most outstanding moments for women on the show when she defended her family against Lionel Brown. She doesn't need anyone to protect her and she shows immense courage every day. This season, she stands her ground with Fergus about his drinking while also trying to help him, in a true balance of love and strength.

Ian

Ian Murray looking angry in Outlander

Ian is a lot like his Uncle Jamie. Even though Ian is still young, he shows a lot of independence. He repeatedly went off on his own with Jamie and Fergus, as well as joined a tribe of Native Americans in his solo adventure. Ian's Enneagram is The Enthusiast, which is the reason why he likes to jump into new situations with little hesitation.

Outlander fans could have watched an entire episode--or season--detailing Ian's time away from the main characters. Not to mention that every main character has a trusty sidekick, and Rollo is the most loyal companion a main character could ask for.

Lizzie

Lizzie joined the main cast when Brianna came to America, and she's been a refreshing addition to the story. Besides being responsible for moving the plot along, and complicating it, by falsely accusing Roger of attacking Brianna and getting him kidnapped, Lizzie has recently been brought to the forefront of a season 6 storyline.

Main character energy attracts suitors, and Lizzie has captured the hearts of Josiah and Keziah Beardsley on the Ridge. The best main character storylines in romance stories involve love triangles, and it seems like there may be one between these three, with Lizzie holding her own and getting the twins to do just about anything she asks.

Ned Gowan

There are plenty of times that Ned Gowan was solely responsible for Claire not being imprisoned or murdered outright. Many characters on Outlander are low-key heroes, but Ned Gowan is in a league all his own. With an unmatched intellect, creativity, quick thinking, and courage, he doesn't get enough recognition.

When Claire traveled back to the 1700s, she was shocked to find that Ned Gowan was still alive and well. Fans can only hope that they'll be able to see the much-loved lawyer again sometime soon on the show.

Louise de La Tour

Louise de La Tour's time on Outlander was fairly short, but her narrative was intensely interesting, and she was a strong character who had a lot going on in her life. While she was featured on the show she played matchmaker, went to lavish parties, had a secret affair with the Prince, and became pregnant with his child.

Not to mention, she had a pet monkey that would bite people and she liked to parade around with her dressing gown open. Suffice to say, she had major main character energy that wasn't explored nearly enough on the show.

Murtagh

Murtagh was a best friend and partner for many seasons on the show and even made a reappearance in one of Outlander's many book-to-show changes. Fans loved him so much, that writers were wary to part with him for the newer seasons and wrote him into the new script.

Murtagh had a lot going on outside of his story with Jamie and Claire, although he showed great courage and charisma in that as well. He was in love with Jamie's mother, was the head of the Regulators with fellow men under his direction, and had an ill-fated love affair with Jocasta. Finally, he had a noble and touching death, which is another trademark of a true main character.

Malva

Malva is even newer to the show than Lizzie, with only season 6 episodes under her belt, but she's already showing big potential on the show. Something is alluring and mysterious about her, and fans can't help thinking that her role in the season 6 narrative will be a large one.

Malva has a fascination with Claire and her work, but a strained relationship with her highly religious father, who doesn't approve of her spending time away from her housework and being influenced by Claire's more liberal mindset. There also seems to be a budding romance between Malva and Ian, giving her even more main character ammunition.

Roger

Roger MacKenzie looking serious on Outlander

Roger has not always been main character material on Outlander. At first, he and Brianna had a rocky courtship because Roger couldn't respect the kind of relationship that she wanted or treat her like the modern woman she was. When faced with the idea of her child not being his, he cowardly ran away.

But, Roger has grown a lot since that time on the show, largely due to the intensely traumatizing and sad things that have happened to Roger. Since his introduction, he has stepped up to the plate as a husband and father and become a leader of his community as a makeshift minister on the Ridge. He, most recently, saved Marsali and Fergus's newborn baby from drowning--like the main character that he is.

Fergus

Outlander-season-6-Fergus

Fergus has been one of the best-supporting characters of the show and a fan favorite, to be sure. After his heartbreaking childhood, Claire and Jamie took Fergus in and gave him a life outside of the brothel. Since then, he had a whirlwind romance with Marsali and started a family.

What is starting to give Fergus his main character moment is his impending comeback story. Fergus is at the lowest point in his life. He feels guilty for Marsali and Claire's attack and uses alcohol as a crutch. He even recently attempted to take his own life. Coming back from the lowest point is what can make a truly great main character journey on a show, and Fergus is on that path.

Brianna

Brianna is the very epitome of main character energy in a supporting character. Since being introduced to the show, she single-handedly helped unite Claire and Jamie, traveled through time and to the Americas on her own, suffered a horrible assault, had to fight for her life, and came out even stronger than before.

Brianna, when given the option to give her attacker a merciful death, did so, displaying her strength and grace. She knows how to shoot a gun and fend for herself, while also being a great mother to Jemmy. Like her mother, she's at home in both periods and doesn't let anyone dictate her self-identity.
