There are new and returning characters in Outlander season 5. Starz's adaptation of the Diana Gabaldon book series, Outlander is set during the 18th century Jacobite Risings. The series stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall who has time-travelled from 1946.

Claire is a former World War II nurse whose affair with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Highland warrior participating in the conflict, provides the centerpiece of the show's drama. Outlander Season 5, which will follow Gabaldon's The Fiery Cross, will pick up shortly after where season 4 left off during the American Revolution. Jamie is fighting to defend his family at all costs on Fraser's Ridge, even though he secretly sides with the British, while Claire tries to keep the family together.

Caitriona Balfe stars as Claire Randall, the veteran combat nurse who accidentally travels 200 years in the past to 18th century Scotland. It's here where she meets and eventually marries Jamie Frasier. Balfe's performance has received numerous accolades including five Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama. Recently, Balfe portrayed Mollie Miles in the Oscar-winning drama, Ford v Ferrari.

Sam Heughan plays Jamie Frasier, a Highland warrior in the 18th century who falls in love with Claire, whom he later marries. During his time on Outlander, Heughan has been nominated for five Saturn Awards and one Critics Choice Award. In addition to Outlander, 2020 will be a busy year for Heughan, since he's set to star alongside Vin Diesel in Bloodshotwhich hits theaters this March.

Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall Fraser: Claire and Jamie's daughter and Roger's wife. Sophie Skelton portrayed Zoe Parker in Day of the Dead: Bloodline and Lisa MacAvoy in 211.

Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield: An Oxford professor who marries Brianna. Richard Rankin is best known for his work on the Scottish sketch show, Burnistoun.

Tobias Menzies as Frank Randall: Claire's husband and descendant of Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. Tobias Menzies portrayed Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones.

Lauren Lyle as Marsali Fraser: Eldest daughter of Laoghaire MacKenzie and Simon MacKimmie, and the wife of Fergus Fraser. Lauren Lyle starred in Tell It to the Bees opposite Anna Paquin.

Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser: Jamie's godfather and leader of the Regulators. Lacroix played Henry de Percy in Netflix's Outlaw King.

John Bell as Young Ian: The youngest son of Ian and Jenny Murray. Ian is referred to as "young Ian" in order to differentiate from his father, Ian Murray. John Bell notably plays Bain, the son of Bard, in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

David Berry as Lord John Grey: An English soldier and French diplomat who secretly falls in love with Jamie. David Berry is best known for his role as James Bligh on the Australian television series A Place to Call Home.

César Domboy as Fergus Fraser: A French immigrant who Jamie hires as a pickpocket. CésarDomboy had a supporting role in Robert Zemeckis's 3D drama The Walk starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta Cameron: Skilled artist who strikes up a relationship with Murtagh. Maria Doyle Kennedy starred as Penny Lawlor in Sing Street and Siobhán Sadler in Orphan Black.

Colin McFarlane as Ulysses: Slave who served as Jacosta's butler. Most audiences would associate Colin McFarlane with his role as Commissioner Loeb in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Tim Downie as William Tyron: Royal Governor of North Carolina. Before his role on Outlander, Tim Downie played Brevet in Les Misérables and the Duke of Gloucester in The King's Speech.
