In the first look teaser for Outlander season 4, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) try to make a new life for themselves in America, but encounter fresh danger and new mysteries.
Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, Starz's whirlwind sort-of-sci-fi romance began with Claire, a British Army nurse trying to restore her marriage after the end of World War II, being whisked back in time to the 18th century. There she found herself torn between her devotion to her husband and a new relationship with smoldering Scotsman Jamie, whom she was forced to marry in order to spare herself from capture by her first husband's villainous ancestor. The season 2 finale saw Claire sent back to her own time, where she gave birth to and raised Jamie's daughter, and season 3 saw the lovers reunited again after 20 years in their respective timelines.
At the end of season 3, after a series of events that's far too complicated to get into, Jamie and Claire found themselves washed up on a strange shore - and that strange shore was in none other than Georgia, in the soon-to-be-United States of America. In the season 4 teaser, Claire and Jamie arrive at River Run, the home of Jamie's Aunt Jocasta (Marie Doyle Kennedy), who is accompanied by her slave, Ulysses (Colin MacFarlane). Based on the various ominous moments that follow, it's clear that Claire and Jamie's plans to build a new life won't go smoothly.
One of the most intriguing moments in the trailer is Claire discovering a skull with an anachronistic silver filling in it, which she interprets as "a warning from the future." Of course, we've known for some time that Claire isn't the only person to have travelled through time via the standing stones at Craig na Dun, but she's a long way from Scotland now. Did someone else make the same journey, or is there more than one way to travel to the past? And how does the shot of a woman in a red coat at Craig na Dun fit into the story? Flash-forwards to Claire and Jamie's daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), in the future, perhaps?
There's a lot more to this story, as Outlander has already been renewed for season 5 and 6, and it looks like the next chapter will involve angry mobs, Native Americans, and - of course - even more raunchy love scenes between Claire and Jamie. Let the melodrama continue!
Outlander season 4 will premiere on Starz in November 2018.
