The popular romantic drama Outlander will return for season 4 on Starz this November. The latest season is set to follow the fourth book in the series written by Diana Gabldon entitled Drums of Autumn. The series – which focuses on the love story between a World War II nurse and the Highland warrior she meets through methods of time-travel – will continue from where it left off after the conclusion of its third season.

Outlander, developed by Ronald D. Moore, premiered August 2014 on Starz. The show and book series tell the intriguing, romantic tale of an English WWII nurse – Claire Randall – living in the 1940s who, by near happenstance, gets transported back in time to Scotland in the 1700s during the Jacobite risings, where she falls madly in love with a Scottish highlander named Jamie Fraser. The historical fiction, sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, romantic drama stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as the star-crossed lovers, who, at the end of season 3, find themselves stranded in an early America in the 1700s after a tumultuous journey and a shipwreck.

TV Line reveals Outlander season 4 will premiere on Sunday, November 4. Outlander's long-anticipated premiere date follows a teaser trailer from July and the announcement that Outlander had been renewed for seasons 5 and 6. Being that the show mirrors the book series, each season represents one book in said series; therefore, there is potential for the show to continue on for nine seasons. Season 5 and 6 will each feature 12 episodes, which differs from season 1, which boasted 16 episodes, and seasons 2 and 3, which both had 13.

Outlander season 4 teaser

Fans of Claire and Jamie can't get enough of their timeless unexpected romance. The finale episode of Outlander season 3 left the beloved heroes in a perilous situation. America is in its infancy; the American Revolution is in its early stages. This time period undoubtedly parallels the Jacobian risings – uprisings and rebellions in Great Britain and Ireland – that are featured so heavily in previous seasons of the show. Claire and Jamie may have washed up on an unfamiliar shoreline but it appears they will be grappling with conflicts that are quite familiar in the new world.

News of the release date may come as a shock to Outlander fans, however, as seasons 1, 2 and 3 premiered in August, April, and September, respectively. One has to wonder why the series changes the timing of its release each season, especially when the content is preexisting. Hopefully, it's not an issue that could impact the fate of the beloved show, which is, again, already slated to return for another two seasons over the next few years.
