For the last five years, fans have had the pleasure of watching the Outlander books being brought to life on screen. The viewers have thoroughly enjoyed watching the romance between Jamie and Claire blossom as well as the one between Brianna and Roger. Fans have also enjoyed watching the battle and fight sequences unfold as they have provided much entertainment.

The writers even delighted fans when they diverted away from the canon by keeping Murtagh alive. However, by giving him more of a role in the series, the viewers have found that there are a few things about the Scotsman's arc that don't make a lot of sense. Here are a few examples...

Why Didn't He Marry Jocasta Later In Life?

Murtagh Romantic Jocasta

As many fans know, Murtagh had spent most of his life loving Ellen from afar. He even attempted to gain her hand in marriage. However, he soon conceded to defeat when he discovered that she was set to marry Brian Fraser. Nevertheless, one has to wonder why he didn't end up getting together with Jocasta earlier?

While Jocasta would have been too young to get married by the time Murtagh "proposed" to Ellen, that doesn't mean they couldn't have married when she was older. Especially since she was widowed twice and still living in Scotland for many years. Jocasta still would have been on the Frasers radar for some time so it wasn't totally impossible...

Not Revealing Randall's Survival But Insists He Duel Him?

Murtagh and Jamie Outlander

Murtagh's indecisiveness didn't make a lot of sense either when one looks at how he handled the Black Jack Randall situation. In season 2, the viewers saw Claire confide in Murtagh after she discovered Black Jack Randall was alive. Murtagh advised Claire that she shouldn't tell Jamie about the Captain's survival because it would affect their plans and hinder Jamie's recovery.

However, he seemed to have a change of heart when he was later seen helping Jamie prepare for his duel. When Jamie told Murtagh that he wasn't going through with it, his godfather got angry with him. Why would he change his mind so quickly? It seemed they had shoe-horned it in just so Claire could tell Murtagh the truth about her origins.

Why Is He So Accepting Of The Truth?

Another aspect of Murtagh's arc that didn't make much sense was how quick he was to accept Claire's truth. It is quite funny when one realizes how accepting everyone is of Claire when she tells them she is from the future. Since the eighteenth-century was very superstitious and against witchcraft, one would think there would be some concern.

However, when Claire finally tells Murtagh the truth, he takes it all in stride. He doesn't seem alarmed either that Claire possesses all this knowledge of the future or upcoming battles. He even takes it better than Frank and Brianna -which is even peculiar. Regardless of whether she was Jamie's wife or not, he should have been a little skeptical...

Why Didn't He Write To Jenny & Ian To Let Them Know He Was Alive?

Ian with his arm around Jenny

When the viewers learned that Murtagh was alive and well in season 4, they were delighted. They were even happier to see Jamie and his godfather reunite. However, a bit of a damper has been placed on the situation when one wonders why he never told Jenny and Ian of his survival.

Since he swore he would never leave Jamie's side when he was young, it's safe to say that he would have been around Lallybroch a lot. Jenny has also proven to extremely trust Murtagh and considered him to be family. So why didn't he send word of his survival? At least then Jamie could have found out his godfather was alive and well much earlier...

Murtagh's Age In Season 4?

Murtagh Fitzgibbons

For those who haven't read the books, they may not know that Murtagh was meant to have died during the Battle of Culloden. This meant that everything the writers included in the show was not canon. However, this seems to have caused a bit of a plot hole.

Some fans have estimated that there are at least 25 years between Murtagh and Jamie if they take into context the Ellen/Jocasta storyline. If this is the case, then by the time Jamie and Murtagh meet again, he should at least be 80. The illness he underwent at Ardsmuir Prison should have affected him physically too. Yet, he seemed as fit as a fiddle. This shouldn't have been possible...

Why Would He Attack Bonnet In A Public Place?

Murtagh arrested on Outlander

When Murtagh revealed to Jamie and Young Ian that he was the leader of the Regulators, a lot of fans were upset because it placed him on the opposite side. They were also further alarmed to hear of the dangerous and notorious reputation he had attained among the English Redcoats, which suggested he was a high rated fugitive.

However, what didn't make sense was why he wouldn't keep a low profile. Why would he agree to find Bonnet for Jamie, knowing well that the smuggler was in Redcoat terrain? If he was so dedicated to his work then it seemed a little reckless that he would attack Bonnet in enemy territory.

Where Was He When Jamie Was In The Bastille & Claire Had A Miscarriage?

Faith burial

Considering that Murtagh swore to never leave Jamie's side, one has to wonder where the Scotsman was after Jamie got himself locked up in the Bastille. Although Jamie tasked him with selling Comte St. Germain's wine, it seems like a long time passes by the time he is released from prison.

Most people also agree that Murtagh would have come running to their aid, especially if he found out that Claire had a miscarriage and was on her own. There was no way that he would have stayed in Portugal while they suffered.

Why Ask Jocasta To Wait When He Knows He Will Lose The War?

Murtagh and Jamie in Outlander

In season 5, the viewers saw Murtagh ask Jocasta to not marry Duncan and wait for him. He also says that he knows he could make her happy once the war is over. However, this doesn't make sense when Murtagh knows that he will lose the war. He knew it the minute he realized Jamie had joined Tryon's militia...

Even if the Regulators won the war, how long would it have been before another one arose? With Murtagh's notorious reputation among the Redcoats, he would always be hunted. What kind of future could they have if they were always on the move?

Why Participate In Another War?

Murtagh Fitzgibbons Outlander

After departing Ardsmuir Prison, Jamie and Murtagh were seen to be separated for over 12 years. While Jamie was sent to Helwater, Murtagh was sold in the New World for his indenture. When his owner died, Murtagh was able to attain the smithy after the owner's widow sold it to him.

Essentially, this meant Murtagh could put some roots down since he would have believed his oath to Jamie had ended. Since he was close to 80, Murtagh would have decided this was the time to settle. He even told Claire once that he wanted to find a wife and not always be on the move. So why would he join another rebellion and become the leader? He could have done anything once he was free...

Why Did He Stay In America After His Owner Died?

Murtagh with Young Ian and Jamie

Another question that loomed in the back of the viewers' minds was why Murtagh decided to stay in America after his owner died. Since his indenture would have ended, nothing would have stopped him from returning to Scotland and reuniting with the Frasers and Murrays.

Once he realized Jamie was alive, he could have gone with him to Edinburgh and help him with his business. The other possibility is that Murtagh could have also gone to River Run where Jocasta was. They could have even been married by the time Jamie and Claire arrived in Scotland. Either way, it doesn't make sense that Murtagh would prefer to stay in an isolated town when nothing was stopping him from going home...
