Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore's time travel drama series Outlander has earned itself critical praise and a devoted following since debuting last year. Based on a series of best-selling novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander follows former World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who suddenly finds herself transported to Scotland in 1743.
The show follows Claire as she navigates the terrain of the past, having been caught up in the conflict between the Highlanders and the Redcoats. She discovers that her husband Frank - left behind in the future - has a nasty double in the past in the form of British Captain 'Black Jack' Randall (both played by Tobias Menzies) and develops feelings for Scottish fighter Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
Outlander ended its superior midseason finale somewhat abruptly, with Claire captured by Black Jack's men just before she finds a way back to Frank. Now we have a trailer for the rest of the season, which you can watch above.
Claire appears to have come to terms with her new home and is ever more dedicated to her marriage to Jamie, but the trailer teases that the sense of darkness pervading their relationship will complicate things. Claire's very presence will be questioned as well, even as she grows protective toward her Scotsman - who is seen here accepting a duel and taking a whipping.
The general consensus with Outlander is that Starz has finally earned a place in the premium cable original drama ranks next to the likes of HBO and Showtime. Previous efforts like the famously lurid (though wildly entertaining) Spartacus and Kelsey Grammar tour de force Boss remain underrated, but the appeal of Outlander lies in not just its smart writing and engaging lead actress, but the existential drama that has proven surprisingly universal.
Fans of the show have several more months of waiting to find out if Outlander can retain its momentum for the remainder of its debut outing and justify its season 2 renewal. Expect more glimpses into the midseason return in the coming weeks.
Outlander returns to Starz on April 4, 2015
