For fans of STARZ’s Outlander who get emotionally invested in the characters and plot, it’s good to occasionally take a step back and realize the show doesn’t always make sense. After all, it’s about a middle-aged woman who is married to two men from different time periods.
Plus, the time travel elements don’t always add up as the characters’ actions in the past don’t seem to affect the present which goes against the logic of every other time travel-related story out there. But regardless, here are some funny Outlander memes that poke fun at the show’s logical reasoning.
10 Another Outlander
While there is no official term for Outlander fans, like Trekkies for Star Trek, fans of the actor Sam Heughan who plays Jamie Fraser (the Eighteenth Century Scotsman whom Outlander’s heroine Claire Randall falls in love with) call themselves Heughan’s Heughligans according to Town & Country Magazine. While most of them are women, there are a few men.
Still, the craziness that tends to be associated with Outlander fans in general ironically makes the sense of community between them stronger. Hence why the above meme is so funny, because the expressions of surprise and joy on the actors’ faces from this picture of a blooper matches the tagline well.
9 Hugging Stones
Now the above meme may seem ridiculously silly at a glance, there’s a method to the madness so to speak. In the Outlander show, the main method that Claire travels between her own time (which begins in the late 1940s) and Eighteenth Century Scotland is by touching one of the stones in a stone circle called Craigh na Dun.
Of course, Craigh na Dun is a fictional location. But there are plenty of stone circles in England and Scotland that inspired it, thus Outlander fans are naturally compelled to visit them with some cases resulting in literally hugging the stones in the hopes of traveling back in time like Claire to meet a good-looking Scotsman.
8 Balriggan Is Miles From Lallybroch
Because Claire travels back through time and gets involved in historical events, namely the Jacobite Risings in Scotland, Outlander is often put under the historical fiction genre. However, not everything in the show is historically accurate or reflective of actual geography. Thus, we get this funny meme featuring Giorgio A. Tsoukalos who’s a consultant for the History channel show Ancient Aliens that’s notorious for its questionable evidence.
The tagline references two locations in the show, Balriggan and Lallybroch, which are both fictional and not that far from each other. But there is a town called Balriggan in Ireland and the historical Midhope Castle in England was used as a shooting location for Lallybroch, which are over 200 miles apart in reality with the North Channel between them.
7 Don’t Love
Though there was a love triangle between Claire, Jamie, and Claire’s first husband Frank Randall, it’s not the only one in the Outlander show. Enter Brianna, the daughter of Claire and Jamie, who also has the power to travel back through time just like her mother.
She not only has a love-interest in the 1970s named Roger MacKenzie, but in the Eighteenth Century she meets a pirate named Stephen Bonnet who rapes her. Yet despite this, Brianna develops sympathy for him hence the above meme which summarizes her and Stephen’s relationship in a nutshell.
6 Compelling Argument Kilt
There’s no denying that one of the main reasons Outlander is so popular among women is the attractiveness of its Scottish male characters. Now one could argue that this female fascination with Scotsmen arguably started with movies like Highlander and Braveheart, but Outlander’s the show that made it popular in the mainstream sense.
But how can anyone take guys that wear an article of clothing that resembles a skirt seriously? Well, that’s what the above meme illustrates. It doesn’t matter what the man wears so long as he’s good-looking and knows how to seduce a lady.
5 Mother/Daughter Inner Thoughts
Apart from the wish-fulfillment fantasy aspect of Outlander’s premise, another prominent theme in the series is familial relationships. Nowhere is this more clear than in the relationship between Claire and Brianna, whose lives end up being strikingly similar. Because of this, they share a close bond in the show.
However, that wasn’t always the case. After Frank dies in a car crash, Claire heads to Scotland to reunite with Jamie though Brianna’s unaware of this as she accompanies her mother. So the above meme makes fun of this irrational decision by revealing the inner thoughts of both women as being about trivial things and not anything important.
4 Tribal Chief Yelp Review
Though misunderstandings are a given in any romance-related TV show or movie, they can give one a headache if they’re not well thought out let alone have a logical reasoning behind them. In the case of Outlander, the misunderstanding that Roger was the one who raped Brianna (though it was actually Stephen) came about because someone saw him and Brianna arguing over his sudden arrival in the Eighteenth Century.
Despite Roger’s innocence, he ended up being sent to the American Colonies and enslaved by a Mohawk tribe. Thus, this meme pokes fun at Roger’s situation which happened due to a ridiculous misunderstanding.
3 Save The Day
As much as fans root for the relationship between Claire and Jamie that’s been the main focus of the Outlander series, there are some that aren’t entirely onboard with it. According to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, some Reddit users who are watching the show for the first time “Feel Jamie and Claire are lacking in the communication department and seem a bit selfish.”
Of course, this doesn’t speak for everyone who watches Outlander though it does explain their actions in the show as the above meme points out. Whenever Jamie and Claire decide to interfere in something, whether it’s historically relevant or not, it is usually for personal reasons and results in them either being momentary saviors or complicating things.
2 Red Coat Husband
Without context, this meme is kind of funny but it’s even sillier if one is familiar with Outlander. Granted, it’s a reference to the very first episode when Claire first travels back in time and meets Frank’s ancestor Jonathan ‘Black Jack’ Randall who serves as the main antagonist for Outlander’s first season.
So the above meme is funny because it pokes fun at Claire’s mixed feelings about Frank himself following her first time travel experience. Because even though Frank and Jonathan aren’t the same person, it doesn’t help that the actor who plays as Frank also does Jonathan.
1 Frank Can’t Find Claire
Despite Jonathan’s antagonism in the first season of Outlander, his descendant Frank searches for Claire in the present while she’s off falling in love with Jamie who saved her life but marries her under contrived circumstances. So one may view Claire’s relationship between both men differently due to how they each treat her.
Though it’s clear from the sarcastic tone of the above meme that it makes fun of Claire’s seemingly instant dismissal of the man she’s been married to for someone else who’s more good-looking. It also points out Frank’s ineptitude at finding Claire, though given how suddenly she went back through time there was no way to tell him where she was going.
