Fergus, first known as Claudel, is an orphan who grew up in a brothel. Jamie Fraser hired him as a pickpocket and later on adopted him as his son.

Marsali, on the other hand, is from a family with an abusive father and a mother who doesn’t approve of her relationship with Fergus. They are truly a couple who will go against all odds to fight for their love, and like most of the couples in this series, there is more to them in the books.

Marsali And Fergus Remained In Jamaica

Fergus and Marsali, together with Jamie and Claire, boarded the Artemis to save Ian from the hand of Mrs. Abernathy who turns out to be Geillis, a fellow time traveler. In the show, upon successfully saving Ian, the five of them headed back home in the Artemis

In the season 3 finale, Fergus and Marsali were still on board when the ship was wrecked in Georgia. In the book, Fergus and Marsali chose to stay in Jamaica and not board the ship. After all, they are newlyweds and opt to spend time with each other apart from the other characters, although they meet up again later.

Marsali And Claire’s Bond Is Not Obvious In The Books

All fans have witnessed how much Marsali loathed Claire in the earliest parts of the story. Over time, Marsali is seen practicing medicine under Claire’s tutelage after seeing Marsali butcher an animal without flinching and with much ease. The bond they have departs from what the books have portrayed. The show has the two women see each other in a different light by making Marsali an apprentice. The dynamics between the two women allowed Marsali more screen time and to reiterate her internal struggle in having a mother-daughter relationship with Claire since her relationship with her own mother, Laoghaire, is terrible.

Fergus And Marsali’s Children Are Baptized Before Brianna And Roger’s Wedding

The Frasers and their extended family meet at the Gathering at Mount Helicon, an annual get together of high society in North Carolina. The show proceeded with Brianna and Roger’s wedding. In the book The Fiery Cross, Fergus and Marsali’s children, Germain and Joan, are baptized before the wedding. The baptism was done in secret since the priest was arrested due to Catholicism having been outlawed in North Carolina. This also affected Roger and Brianna’s wedding as they had opted for a Protestant ceremony. Some fans were disappointed that the show didn’t include the baptism since it was an important factor showing Jamie’s great faith.

Fergus And Marsali Were At The Ridge When Brianna Got There

In the fourth season of the show, Marsali and Fergus were in Wilmington instead of Fraser’s Ridge when Brianna got there. But Marsali and Fergus were seen leaving Wilmington to get away from the authorities who were looking for the people involved in the delay of Murtagh Fraser’s capture. Murtagh was the leader of the Regulator movement, farmers who eliminate corruption in the state, which puts Jamie in a dilemma as he has given his word to Governor William Tryon in securing the backcountry. But Jamie refuses to turn Murtagh in to the authorities. Fergus and Marsali left Wilmington to avoid the arising turmoil.

Marsali And Brianna Weren’t Friends In The Book

In the book, there was no friendship formed between Marsali and Brianna. In the show, the producers and writers were torn whether to make them friends or adversaries but finally decided to walk the path where they are friends. Their bond was shown when Brianna feared that Stephen Bonnet, the man who raped her, was still alive and would come to get her and her child, Jemmy.

Also, in the latest episode of Outlander, Marsali was there to comfort Brianna when her child was believed to have been kidnapped by Stephen. The producers wanted a fresh storyline about two women supporting each other amidst the centuries they grew up in. Their friendship is likely to grow from there because of the American Revolution.

Marsali And Fergus Give A Decent Burial To The Victims Of The Artemis Shipwreck

A storm hits the Artemis, which is the same storm the Porpoise experienced. Claire was on the Porpoise to help with an illness outbreak while Jamie left to follow her. Left on the Artemis were Marsali, Fergus, and Mr. Willoughby, a Chinese medicine man who healed Jamie while aboard the Artemis. The Artemis hits a large reef that makes a big hole on the ship’s bottom. Once the ship reached the ground, Fergus and Marsali gathered the dead bodies of the crew members who were thrown overboard and drowned. They gave the crew members a decent burial. Marsali prayed over the bodies of the deceased while sprinkling them with the holy water Jamie bought for her in Notre Dame, Paris.

Marsali Was Physically Abused As A Child

Marsali with Fergus in Outlander

Unlike Fergus, we did not see Marsali as a child growing up. On the show, we only hear of her family background from her stories as an adult. Marsali’s real father was Simon MacKimmie who was arrested after the Jacobite rising and later died in prison in 1745. He was recalled to be very short-tempered and violent towards his wife, Laoghaire, and daughters, Marsali and Joan. Marsali recalls her father to have hit her as a child when she didn’t stop crying. Her mother tried to defend her and ended up being pushed so hard that her face hit the chimney.

Fergus Was Molested As A Child

Fergus is an orphan who grew up in Madame Elise’s brothel. He slept inside the closet and was allowed to go out when the brothel wound down in the morning. He shares a bit of friendship with the ladies joining them for breakfast and brushing their hair. There were times that the male customers requested a male child inside the brothel. This was not included in the show because this would be too disturbing to see, but there was a scene where Jamie Fraser challenged Jack Randall, a young knight, upon seeing him molesting Fergus. This started the bond between Fergus and Jamie. Fergus, on the other hand, helped Jamie escape from attackers.

Marsali And Fergus Were First Wed In A Handfasting Ceremony

Marsali and Fergus informed Jamie that they were married right after boarding the Artemis. Fergus made sure that Marsali boarded at the last possible moment to avoid Jamie from sending her back home to Laoghaire.  The actual handfasting ceremony was not depicted in the show. A handfasting ceremony is an old custom that creates a temporary bond between a man and a woman. A couple wed themselves in the absence of a priest by mutual agreement that expires after a year and a day. Jamie strongly believed in the Catholic wedding. He asked the couple to sleep in separate cabins during their voyage

Malva Christie Is Claire’s Apprentice And Not Marsali

The Outlander show has left out a very important character from the books, which was Malva Christie. Malva was first introduced by Gabaldon in A Fiery Cross. She lives in Fraser’s Ridge with her family. Her character resurfaces in A Breath of Snow and Ashes, where she becomes Claire's apprentice. She helps Claire in her first surgery using ether as anesthesia. The storyline of Malva and Claire ends badly with Malva getting pregnant by incest, and trying to kill Claire, claiming that Jamie is the father. Fans believe that it is sensible to omit that storyline since it is a very big side story to attach to the show.
