Outlander, now in its fifth season, is rife for plenty of other stories using the show's premise and characters. Even the basic concept of time travel allows for plenty of original work. Of course, the romance element also allows for various stories set in different time periods, all centered on Jamie and Claire getting together romantically.

Also, there are alternate universe fanfics, where something about the story changes to send it careening off in a different direction. For example, what if Claire stayed in the past after the Battle of Culloden? What if Faith wasn't a stillbirth? What if, during their 20-year separation, Jamie somehow found his way to Claire and Brianna in the future? Therefore, here are 10 fanfics to read after getting caught up on Outlander.

chunnacas na mairbh beo by romans

A close up of Brianna's face from Outlander

This story, by romans, seeks to find a way for everyone to go to the future, but especially Brianna, who is the main character. The author thought, during the series, that Brianna would leave her son and travel to the future herself, but since that never happened, her story posits that idea.

Brianna has cancer, and in order to live, she time travels to the future. She spends the next several years searching for her family in the past, much the way Frank searched for Jamie.

I Remember Her Always by abbydebeaupreposts

I Remember Her Always by abbydebeaupreposts covers a missing conversation between Brianna and Jamie about the past. They discuss Faith, Claire, and Jamie's time in Paris. Brianna comes to understand her parents better and is also introduced to her sister.

Jamie, in turn, shares his thoughts on Paris, which are not given much attention in the show or book series. Therefore, this fanfic sheds light on character relationships that aren't given as much detail as some people might like.

Flood My Mornings by bonnie-wee-swordsman

Brianna finally meets Jamie

Flood My Mornings is a long-running series by bonnie-wee-swordsman. Here, Jamie made his way through the stones just a few years after Culloden.

Claire and Frank have divorced, prompting the latter to move back to England, while Claire stayed in Boston. Jamie takes longer than he thought to find Claire but eventually succeeds, and they finally set up a life together. From there, the fanfic becomes a series of self-contained stories about their life in 1950s Boston.

Clair(e)voyance by notevenjokingrightnowfic

This story, by notevenjokingrightnowfic, is a modern, police procedural alternate universe piece where Jamie works as a police detective and Claire is the new medical examiner. She is also a clairvoyant; therefore, as she and Jamie grow closer, they use her powers to solve cases.

Various characters from the series show up when it is least expected of them, such as Jack Randall and Geneva Dunsany. Each case forms an arc, which makes this story easy to pick up and put down again.

Two Red Hens by writtenrebellion

Brianna stares off into the distance in Outlander

Two Red Hens by writtenrebellion is a letter written from Murtagh to Ellen in a universe where everything works out. The two red hens of the title are Faith and Brianna, who both survive. The Frasers live in the past, at Lallybroch, and everything is wonderful and nothing hurts. Everyone is alive.

Murtagh shares his observations on the girls and Fergus, as well as his own appreciation of what his life has become. He says he hopes not to see Ellen or Brian anytime soon, a sentiment that is undoubtedly shared by the girls.

Grace by futurelounging

Mary McNabb in apron looking pensive in Outlander

This is the story of Mary McNab, one of Lallybroch's tenants. Claire helps her son during Dragonfly in Amber, and Mary comforts Jamie romantically during Voyager.

Throughout her time with the Frasers, Mary can see Claire's grace and is able to appreciate it for what it is. She's a gentle person, and the writing, by futurelounging, fits her personality, as it's lovely and quiet. This is a character study of someone the audience doesn't see very much of, and it's worth the read.

Reaching Through the Veil by spinsterclaire

Aiming to solve the question of how Jamie comes to be looking through Claire's window at the beginning of Outlander, Reaching Through the Veil by spinsterclaire covers Jamie's travels as a spirit.

Jamie follows Claire to Boston during their 20 years of separation, but she can't hear him. He tries to get her attention in any way he knows how, but to no avail. Ultimately, he finds his solution through Brianna.

Lines by theministerskat

Tobias Menzies as Frank

Lines by theministerskat follows Frank and Reverend Wakefield as they investigate Jamie Fraser's life. Someone comes by with a box for the reverend, which happens to be for Jem, Roger and Brianna's son.

The reverend then unearths a family tree that gives both he and Frank insight into their children's future lives. Frank's character is spot-on here, as he is angry at the thought of finding anything connected to Jamie Fraser, yet loves Brianna more than life itself.

Of Kith & Kin by ianmuyrray

During season 4, when Brianna stops by Lallybroch on her way to North Carolina, her aunt Jenny is elsewhere, delivering a baby. This fanfic by ianmuyrray enters Ian's head when Jenny returns and he tells her about their foreign visitor.

Pearls, Plaids, & Pistols by anoutlandishfanfic

Before the Battle of Culloden, when Jamie brings Claire to the stones so she can go back to Frank, something goes wrong. Jamie hangs onto Claire, and they don't go forward in time, but further back: To 1545.

Written by anoutlandishfanfic, this story has a lovely rendering of the togetherness a married couple can have. Claire and Jamie are truly partners here, particularly because they are both in a strange place and time. This story has a long, beautiful setup with some very interesting ideas.
