Adapting a beloved book series into film or television might seem like a daunting task. And in the case of Diana Gabaldon's popular Outlander series, it was even worse! So many characters, such a complex storyline, so much to consider. And one of those things was the characters' physical traits. Gabaldon does a beautiful job of describing Claire, Jamie, Brianna, and so on, so much so, that fans already had a pretty good idea of what their favorite characters looked like.

We must say that the team tasked with casting did a stellar job. Very few deviations were made from the source material where physical traits are concerned. If you're curious to see what the fans of the books and Diana Gabaldon had in mind then this is the perfect article for you! We're comparing the actors bringing our beloved adventurers to life with their book counterparts, drawn by the incredibly talented artists that comprise the fandom of the Outlander books.

Jenny Murray

We were first introduced to Jenny Murray back in season one. Fans of the show quickly fell in love with her witty and commanding nature, and her relationship with her brother Jamie Fraser was delightful, leaving audiences wishing for more. Mrs. Murray was a welcome addition to the show, no doubt!

When it comes to appearance, the show got pretty much everything right - aside from the blue eyes that Jenny is supposed to share with Jamie, of course. She's described as very short, with dark hair, bright blue eyes, and pale. We say actress Laura Donnelly comes pretty close, and this beautiful drawing by Emmillustrate does too!

Dougal Mackenzie

Dougal Mackenzie is probably one of the most polarizing characters in the entire Outlander franchise. Some loved him, some hated him, and others seemed to shift from one side of the spectrum to the other. This depiction by the extraordinary artist leabharlann gives us a pretty new rendition of Dougal.

But it's actually a lot closer to the books! Diana Gabaldon described him as handsome, with a full head of red hair and a red beard, and thick dark eyebrows. We're willing to forgive the differences considering the amazing portrayal of Dougal by Graham McTavish.

Geillis Duncan

She's the bad girl we all hate to love, and no one can deny that Geillis brought a certain spice and mystery to the show that we can't help but miss! We particularly love the mischievous look artist leabharlann was able to give her rendition of the character.

Diana Gabaldon describes Geillis as fair, tall, with beautiful green eyes. So it's safe to say that actress Lotte Verbeek did an amazing job not only portraying the character but also look like what the author and fans of the books had imagined from the very beginning.

Roger Mackenzie

And speaking of Geillis Duncan, let's jump right on to her descendant and man of the hour, Roger Wakefield Mackenzie. Roger isn't exactly perfect or adored by everyone, but he's had his moments. This particular depiction of Roger comes from the brilliant and talented Emmillustrate.

According to his original description, Roger is tall and dark, with bright green eyes that he inherited from the one and only Geillis. Even though actor Richard Rankin has blue eyes, that's a minor detail we're all more than willing to ignore considering how brilliantly he brings the character to life.

Jack Randall

Arguably one of the best, most complex characters to come out of the Outlander franchise, Black Jack Randall has kept all of us up at night once or twice. Ruthless, volatile, and cruel to the bone, Randall's antics made for some quality television - and much of that is due to Tobias Menzies and his insane talent.

Much like in the show, Jack resembles Frank, but with longer, dark hair, tanned skin, and hazel eyes. There's no arguing that Tobias fits the description pretty well, but we're also very fond of aryundomiel's depiction of the character.

Murtagh Fraser

We're yet to find someone who isn't putty in Murtagh Fraser's hands. Can someone just hand him the award of best godfather/person ever? That seems pretty fair, honestly. And we also have to admit that if it wasn't for Duncan Lacroix and his charisma, we probably wouldn't like him as much as we do.

His original description includes a narrow jaw and a rodent-like face, without much else to go on. We enjoy this beautiful piece of fan art by Hoang Nguyen as much as we enjoy the television version.

Lord John Grey

Lord John Grey, probably one of the kindest and bravest characters in the history of television. Fans love him so much, he's set to have is own spin-off show based on the series of short stories by Diana Gabaldon.

Described as fair, with a long head of blonde hair and piercing blue eyes, artist Electricalice created a beautiful rendition of the character. And even though David Berry deviates from this description, we still can't picture anyone else taking on the role.

Brianna Randall Fraser

The child of perhaps one of the most tragic couples since Romeo and Juliet, Brianna Randall Fraser is one of a kind. It took a while for fans of the TV series to warm-up to her, but they're getting there. And when it comes to appearance, there's not much to be criticized here.

Brianna is described as having long red hair and blue eyes, both traits inherited from her father, beautifully captured by artist Emmillustrate. The only thing missing from Sophie Skelton is the blue eyes. But honestly, we barely even notice it!

Jamie Fraser

The man, the legend, the one, and only Jamie Fraser. Brave to an extent of insanity, and handsome beyond belief, Jamie Fraser had been inhabiting the hearts of fans since the first book came out. And when it comes to the casting of Sam Heughan to take on the lead role of Outlander, there are zero reasons for complaint.

Tall, broad of shoulders, with wild red hair and piercing blue eyes - all traits you can see both in the actor, and in this beautiful piece by artist Captivated2. This casting absolutely hit the nail on the head!

Claire Fraser

And we reach the ending of this list with Claire Fraser taking the lead. With four seasons behind us, and the fifth currently airing, is near impossible to imagine anyone else being Claire aside from Caitriona Balfe. She brought the character to life in such a beautiful and unique way, we can't help but commend her.

However, as we can see in this stunning piece by Hoang Nguyen, Claire's supposed to have golden eyes and light brown hair. However, considering the wild curls are still there, along with everything else that makes Claire herself, we are perfectly fine with the changes.
