Fans of Outlander are in the middle of what they jokingly call "Droughtlander," which is the stretch of time between the airing of new seasons. With no new content to fawn over, many die-hard Outlander lovers are rewatching some of their favorite episodes so often, they practically have the scripts memorized.
The writers of the show have truly done justice to the story and characters that Diana Gabaldon has created, and every so often, a character has a single line of dialogue that seems to perfectly encapsulate their personality.
Jamie Fraser
"You have my name, my clan, my family, and, if necessary, the protection of my body as well."
Jamie and Claire's wedding is one of the most romantic episodes of Outlander, and for good reason. The touching moments they share as they truly get to know each other would make anyone from the 21st-century swoon.
Family is incredibly important to Jamie. He didn't get to be there for his growing up, so protecting his own is his life's mission. This quote also highlights Jamie's pure devotion to Claire. He would do and has done, anything to keep her safe and thinks of her as bone of his bone and blood of his blood.
Claire Fraser
"I believe we can do anything we want as long as we're together."
Claire is a powerful woman who is very independent and capable. But, her true strength and happiness shine through when she's with Jamie. Claire and Jamie are soulmates on Outlander, and she says several times that she believes fate brought them together.
Furthermore, Claire and Jamie are a force to be reckoned with when they have a goal. They wanted to try to stop the Battle of Culloden, so they worked together to do everything they could to change the events leading up to it. When Claire wanted to create penicillin, Jamie supported her and did anything she asked.
Brianna McKenzie (Fraser)
"I know that a sheet of paper is not made to fly, but sometimes we have to adjust our expectations to be and reshape ourselves."
The Gemini spirit of adaptability is present in Outlander, especially for Claire and Brianna. She delivers this line while talking with Roger about overcoming traumatic events and adjusting expectations, and Brianna has done that her entire time on the show.
Brianna had a preconceived notion about who Claire was, but then had to adapt to the new information she learned not only about Claire, but her real father, Jamie. Then, after chasing Claire into the 1700s, she experienced her own trauma at the hands of Stephen Bonnett, and her entire mindset had to change and reshape itself. She is resilient and strong, and this quote reflects that.
Roger McKenzie
"People live and die by their words. They shape our thoughts and deeds. Often, they define us."
Roger is not usually a physical man. He, instead, was a history professor and musician. His hobby and profession relied on the use of the written word and the power that it holds. Throughout his time on the show, Roger has truly learned the real value of his word.
When he tells Brianna that he wants all of her and that he would follow her anywhere, he does--even back 200 years. His word also cost him his safety at certain points, being captured in an attempt to get back to her. His own quote defines his season 5 journey, as he recovers his voice from being almost hanged, and his words have even more value as his speech is finally restored.
Murtagh Fitzgibbons
"We risk what we must for our beliefs."
Murtagh is one of the most loyal characters on the show. He followed Jamie everywhere after his oath to Jamie's mother to watch over him. He risked his life, safety, and imprisonment in order to support the causes that he truly believed in, especially when it came to Jamie and Claire.
In the end, Murtagh even died by these words, as Roger's quote suggests. Murtagh's character was written into the America storyline and he was the leader of a fight against the Regulators. Murtagh broke viewers' hearts on Outlander when he died for his cause, a man loyal to his belief system.
Marsali Fraser
"Maybe you're not the devil after all."
Marsali's Scorpio personality is the perfect soulmate for Fergus on Outlander. At first, Marsali is guarded against those she doesn't know, like Claire. But, as she develops relationships with people and they earn her trust, she opens her heart up to them.
Marsali has an amazing character arc on the show and has the ability to admit when she's wrong about a thing or person. Her fervent grudge against Claire melted away when she experienced Claire's true nature, and that capacity to adjust and grow has defined Marsali's character ever since.
Fergus Fraser
"Milord, you forget I know your story. If you were forced to marry Milady, then I am forced to breathe. My heart, it is forced to beat."
Fergus's undying love for both Jamie and Claire has been constant for his character on the show. They saved him as a young boy and took care of him as if he was their own.
Fergus is a true French romantic. Growing up, knowing how much Claire and Jamie loved each other and witnessing how passionate they were has led him to be just as romantic and sensitive in his own life. He believes in true love the same way they do and channels it in his relationship with Marsali.
Young Ian Fraser Murray
"I'm a man, free to call the place I choose home."
Young Ian is a truly independent soul. With a fiery spirit that is much like his mother's, he doesn't let anyone tell him where to go or what to do. As a young man, he followed Jamie and lived with him. Later on, he even travels to America with Jamie and Claire.
In Ian's most iconic Outlander scene, he followed his adventurous spirit to the Mohawk tribe and lived with them for a time with his dog, Rollo. Ian goes wherever he pleases and is always searching for one true place to feel at home.
John Grey
"What would you call a man whose mind touched yours? Whose prickly friendship was a gift? Whose character, whose very existence, helped to define your own?"
John Grey is in love with Jamie in the most wholesome way. He got him out of prison, helped him when he needed it, and even dedicated his entire life to raising Jamie's son, whom Jamie sadly doesn't get to live with.
Although the two have a solid and genuine friendship, John's life was forever changed by Jamie, and this quote really grasps the strength of John's affection for him. He would do anything for Jamie and, in his own words, "I should probably want you to the day I die."
Frank Randall
"I'm just afraid that when it all ends, you won't recognize the man I've become."
Frank's story on the show was heartbreaking. He went from being blissfully in love, to desperately searching for his missing wife, to living with her when she was in love with someone else and gave birth to someone else's child.
Frank lived in fear for much of his time on the show. He was afraid of what might've happened to Claire, then afraid that she didn't love him anymore, then afraid that the child he raised wouldn't love him if she knew the truth. He also became a different man in Claire's eyes, and all she could see was his ancestor, Black Jack Randall.
