Diana Gabaldon's Outlander book series is beloved by people all over the world. Naturally, when it was announced that a TV program was in the works, fans were excited but, skeptical. Would it live up to the amazing words and characters penned by Gabaldon or would it stray too far from the story?

Luckily, most of the plotlines have stayed true to their predecessor, with only minors changes. Of course, some of those minor changes were to characters within the series. Some were so small they often went unnoticed. However, there were others that were so greatly incorrect that they were difficult to overlook.

Lizzie Wemyss

Brianna's maid Lizzie was fairly on par with her book description. She was meant to look ghastly and slim. However, one small detail that was overlooked was her height. Actress Caitlin O'Ryan stands just as tall as Sophie Skelton. Her character Lizzie was meant to be short and almost child-like. Of course, the acting is still spot on with this description.

Lord John Grey

When it comes to Lord John Grey, there are quite a few discrepancies between his TV and book counterparts. In the books, Gabaldon had written that John had blonde hair, blue eyes, and feminine-like facial features (as u/Yako tries to convey in their art).

However, most fans would agree that David Berry doesn't exactly look this way. While Berry does have "light blue eyes" and John's charisma, Berry's hair is actually dark brown. Berry also seems to be slightly taller than his book counterpart, standing at 6ft 1" instead of 5ft 6". Nevertheless, despite initial hesitance over the casting, fans are satisfied with how Berry portrayed the character.

Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser

Perhaps the most noticeable character change in terms of looks and plot, Murtagh was not even supposed to make it past the second season as in the books he died at the Battle of Culloden. Of course, the creators of the series decided against the original plotline, keeping him on until season 5 of the show.

This was one of the bigger items that the producers decided to go with for artistic liberty.

While actor Duncan Lacroix does the character justice in terms of mannerism, his appearance is a little different from his book counterpart. Especially since Lacroix stands at 6ft 2" instead of 5ft 4" and is quite broad. In his old age, Murtagh was also seen to let his hair grow out and turn grey. Still, it seems that Lacroix has now become the embodiment of Murtagh if fans base it on u/gimmeparritch's artwork.

Dougal MacKenzie

Dougal and his ancestor, William Buccleigh MacKenzie in Outlander

Dougal was a love-to-hate type of character. The casting directors made an excellent decision in casting Graham McTavish as the Scottish actor managed to capture the fearsome and aggressive nature he always showed against those who threatened his ambitions.

However, many fans would agree that he is far from what the books described. Where McTavish has a grey beard and no hair, the novels state something completely opposite. He has chestnut brown hair and a dark beard. McTavish's eyes also happen to be blue and not hazel like Gabaldon described. If anything, he looked a lot more like book Dougal when he was portraying William Buccleigh MacKenzie.

Jenny Fraser Murray

Eye color is fairly simple to overlook and most fans can get over the fact that actress Laura Donnelly, who portrays Jamie's sister Jenny, has dark eyes rather than the bright blue ones the character is meant to have. However, there are some that are a little more noticeable to diehard fans. Where Jenny is meant to have black and curly hair, Donnelly has maintained her straight, dark brown locks. Donnelly is slightly taller than her book counterpart too, standing at 5ft 4" instead of 5ft. u/AlexOliver has provided quite an accurate interpretation with their work

Roger MacKenzie

His skin tone, his lashes, his eyes. All of them are incorrect features as to how he was described in the books. Actor Richard Rankin has a fair complexion not olive, and he also has lighter, more blue-hued eyes instead of mossy green.

His hair is meant to be black, with a stunning set of black eyelashes, and he is supposed to be extremely tall and broad. While Rankin does an excellent job to portray the essence of Roger, he doesn't exactly fit the description of the books. However, u/AlexOliver seems to be pretty close with another one of their artworks.

Brianna Fraser MacKenzie

Sophie Skelton plays a fairly convincing Brianna in the TV series. However, there were a few small details that casting directors missed in terms of her appearance. For one, it did take the casting department a while to capture "thick red hair" since the actor is a natural brunette and had tried to dye her hair a few times to get it right. However, after there was a bit of a hair disaster, Skelton now wears a wig.

While Brianna is also meant to have blue eyes and stand at 6ft tall, Skelton's eyes are hazel and is only 5ft 8". Nevertheless, the cast and make-up department have done their best to ensure there is a resemblance to her book counterpart. Especially if fans take a look at u/solgas interpretation of the character.

Claire Fraser

As evidenced by u/leabharlann's interpretation, the leading lady of Diana Gabaldon's masterpiece was meant to have brown eyes, instead of the stunning set of blue Caitriona Balfe had. This could easily go unnoticed, however, it does divert away from the source a little as a large part of the books sees Jamie and Claire give each other names of endearment based on their appearances.

For instance, he calls her "Mo duinne/mo nighean donn," which translates from Gaelic to 'my brown one.' This is a term of endearment that definitely encompasses her hair but falls woefully short when it comes to the color of her eyes on the show. Caitriona Balfe's height is also seen to surpass that of her book counterpart, with the Irish actor standing at 5ft 10" instead of 5ft 6".

Jamie Fraser

Jamie's character has extreme detail in the books. Actor Sam Heughan is rather spot on but lacks a few physical features. For instance, his red hair is described in the books as a mass of "auburn, copper, cinnamon, and gold all gleaming together in the morning son" - something u/Captivated2 has tried to emphasize in their depiction.

However, many fans will agree that this is difficult to capture considering that this isn't Sam Heughan's natural hair color. Being a natural blonde, the actor also must dye his hair monthly to keep up with Jamie's luscious locks. Despite not having Jamie's long nose either, most fans wouldn't trade out Heughan for anyone else. The actor even has a cult following of individuals who call themselves 'Heughan's Heughligans.'
