Obsidian Entertainment has officially teased the release of new story-based DLC for The Outer Worlds coming sometime in 2020. Outer Worlds received a great deal of acclaim following its release in October, with many critics singing its praises and many fans comparing it favorably to similar games offered by Bethesda, most notably the infamous Fallout 76.

The Outer Worlds' success extends somewhat to its presence at The Game Awards earlier this week. The game was nominated in three categories: Best RPG, Best Narrative, and Game of the Year. Voice actress Ashly Burch was also nominated for her performance in the game as Parvati Holcomb. While Outer Worlds didn't win any awards, simply being nominated was still quite an achievement, and indicative of the success the game achieved just a few months after its release.

This Friday, a post appeared on the Obsidian forum titled "A Special Thank You From Obsidian." In it, the creators of the game took the time to thank the development team for their work on The Outer Worlds, and to thank the fans for supporting it. The team then went on to announce that they "will be expanding the story through DLC next year!" This statement was not expanded on, save for the promise that "details will be made available at a later date."

Outer Worlds Review Roundup RPG Year 2019 Obsidian

Obsidian Entertainment is known for its RPGs, including fan favorites like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The developer is currently working on other projects, namely a cooperative survival game called Grounded that is expected to launch sometime in Spring 2020. Despite the developer having expressed concerns that they might grow too big, it is understandable that Obsidian would continue to work on Outer Worlds, especially since the scope of the original game was much smaller than similar projects that it drew comparisons to, namely Bethesda projects like Skyrim and the most recent games in the Fallout franchise.

For fans of The Outer Worlds, this news is sure to be an exciting revelation. Details are scarce to the point of nonexistence, and the fact that the DLC was announced by means of a forum post instead of a trailer at the recent Game Awards indicates that the project is still in the very early stages of development. This means that news of the DLC and how it will expand the game's story will likely be a fairly long time coming. But the promise of a release within the year of 2020 is a promising start, and certainly something for players to look forward to as they anticipate the chance to delve back into the strange and troubled worlds of the Halcyon colony.
