The indie cosmic adventure Outer Wilds will soon receive a free new-generation upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Mobius Digital, the title sticks players in a 22-minute time loop and tasks them with exploring a solar system to prevent its impending destruction by a supernova. Outer Wilds will release on Nintendo Switch in 2022, but the exciting exploration game will also be coming to current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles too.

In Outer Wilds players are cast as an unnamed space explorer that must collect knowledge in order to prevent the solar system's destruction. While the game ends after 22 minutes, or if the player accidentally dies prematurely, a time loop mechanic lets the protagonist retain information as they repeatedly start the cycle over again. This means that the player can gradually learn more about the solar system, and how to navigate it efficiently, and sufficiently studying the mysterious Nomai people may hold the key to preventing the apocalyptic explosion. In 2021 Mobius Digital released the Outer Wilds expansion Echoes of the Eye, which lets players explore new locations and uncover new mysteries.

A new trailer from publisher Annapurna Interactive (via YouTube) reveals a free Outer Wilds upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is on the way. The updated version of the indie sci-fi adventure will arrive on September 15, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners able to upgrade for free. The new-generation version of the title will support a native 60 frames per second, and the Echoes of the Eye DLC will also be included in the free upgrade for those who own it. This upgrade will make the game even more intense without sacrificing visual quality.

Outer Wilds delivers a truly original gaming experience by using popular mechanics and features from other titles. The time loop mechanic is similar to roguelike games like Slay the Spire, and Outer Wilds took inspiration from Zelda games for its exploration. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which lets players explore a vast ocean on a sailboat, was apparently a big influence on Outer Wilds and its solar system navigation. The more linear title The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, meanwhile, served as something for Mobius Digital to avoid when crafting their own open-ended cosmic adventure.

Outer Wilds is a truly stunning indie experience, and a current-generation upgrade promises to make the outer space epic even more breathtaking. The free upgrade will let the title run at a native 60 frames per second, bringing the game's visuals alive and making the action even more intense. Those who own Outer Wilds on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S for free starting September 15.
