Taika Waititi celebrates Our Flag Means Death's streaming success with a humorous reaction citing it as a "tragic turn of events." Created by People of Earth alum David Jenkins, the HBO Max comedy revolves around Stede Bonnet, an English aristocrat who has grown bored of his comfortable life and has elected to turn to a life of piracy as the captain of the Revenge, despite having no prior sailing experience. Bonnet will find his desire to be a famous pirate troublesome as he and his dysfunctional crew face off against a variety of naval warships and bloodthirsty pirates, including the legendary Blackbeard.

Waititi, who also executive produces Our Flag Means Death, stars as Blackbeard alongside frequent collaborator Rhys Darby as Bonnet, Kristian Nairn, Nathan Ford, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O'Neill, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, David Fane, Joel Fry, Guz Khan and Matthew Maher. The series was first announced to be in development in late 2020 with a straight-to-series order from HBO Max with Waititi signing on to star, executive produce and direct the pilot after finishing work on Thor: Love and ThunderOur Flag Means Death has received rave reviews from critics since its debut in March and one of the creatives behind the series is celebrating its success.

Since premiering on March 3, Our Flag Means Death has shown exponential growth in its ratings on HBO Max, with Parrot Analytics reporting that the series peaked as the No. 11 most in-demand show in the US and internationally. Additionally, statistics show that the HBO Max comedy had tripled its numbers in the time between its series premiere and season 1 finale, having started at 11.9 times more in demand than the average series and concluding at 36.7 times more. Our Flag Means Death has enjoyed a strong word of mouth from audiences, with some comparing it to that of Apple's Ted Lasso, though the former has outpaced the latter in its growth, closing out with a nearly 43 percent gap above the latter.

Waititi isn't the only one who has celebrated Our Flag Means Death's streaming success, with creator David Jenkins having also taken to Twitter to praise HBO Max for their faith in the series and putting their full creative support behind it. This success should come as exciting news for fans of the pirate romantic comedy as it creates a better likelihood of a season 2 getting off the ground, which Jenkins has expressed a desire to develop.
