Following the acclaim of the first season, Our Flag Means Death season 2 is one of the most anticipated comedies returning to HBO's streaming platform Max. Loosely based upon the unbelievable but true story of Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet, Our Flag Means Death has won acclaim from a variety of audiences. Comedy fans love the series for its humor and many discovered it because of its cast, which is full of talented comedic performers such as Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords and What We Do In The Shadows' Taika Waititi. The show has also built up a strong following among the LGBTQ+ community because of its diverse ensemble and its portrayal of gender-fluid and gay characters.

Our Flag Means Death season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger, with Blackbeard having stolen Stede Bonnet's ship, Revenge. He also regresses into his old persona, having had his heart broken by the inexperienced captain after Stede returned to his wife and sought a pardon instead of escaping custody with Blackbeard. This represents Our Flag Means Death's biggest change from the true story of Stede Bonnet and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach and establishes the chief conflict of the upcoming season 2. With all that the first season set up, Our Flag Means Death season 2 is already set to bring even more bombastic high-seas comedy when it returns in October 2023 on Max.

The trailer for Our Flag Means Death season 2 was also soundtracked with Patti Smith's 1978 hit "Because the Night". Whether Stede and Blackbeard will find each-other again, however, a mystery that won't be revealed until the October 2023 release date rolls around on HBO's streaming platform Max.

The biggest questions regarding the Our Flag Means Death season 2 story revolve around Steed and Blackbeard. While their unexpected romance helped steer Blackbeard down a less villainous path, feeling that he was abandoned by Stede quickly has him back to his old ways. The new Our Flag Means Death season will no doubt address what happens when these two meet again. There is also the question of how Stede's ragtag crew fares with Blackbeard embraces his ruthless side. Also, there is the question of Lucius who might still be alive despite Blackbeard throwing him overboard.

It will also be interesting to see how closely the show follows the historical record and the final fates of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard. While the two captains did sail together for a time, they parted ways in the summer of 1718 and met their deaths before the end of the year. The friendship between Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard isn't historically accurate, but the show would have to veer totally into the realms of pure fiction to give Stede and Ed a happy ending. Beyond that, Our Flag Means Death season 2 will need to address the fate of Jim (who was abducted by Blackbeard and his men).

Our Flag Means Death Season 2: Trailer

The first Our Flag Means Death season 2 trailer, released in September 2023, suggests a very different direction for the new season. The trailer confirms the second season will heavily focus on the broken romance of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard, while also showing the love is clearly still there between them. Stede is shown seeking out Blackbeard and defending his brutal tactics to others, while Blackbeard continues down the darker path he started on in the season 1 finale.

While there looks to be plenty of fun pirate action and there is sure to be a lot of humor, Our Flag Means Death season 2 looks to be a much darker story this time around. It will be interesting if the central romance can be salvaged or if Blackbeard will become too much of a villain to be saved. Above all, the trailer for the next season of Our Flag Means Death season 2 shows that, despite the depth of their feeling for one another, Stede and Blackbeard still have a long road to travel, and they'll have to fight if they want their love to prevail.
