Our Flag Means Death season 2 is officially underway. Debuting on HBO Max back in March and from creator David Jenkins, Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on a true story of its real-life figures. It's set in the early 18th century and focuses on the Golden Age of Piracy. In particular, the comedy examines Stede (Rhys Darby) and his crew as they try to make a name for themselves as pirates, and then cross paths with Taika Waititi's infamous Blackbeard.

Consisting of ten episodes, Our Flag Means Death season 1 garnered positive reviews, with both critics and audiences praised the show for its LGBTQ+ representation. That general acclaim was also reflected in its viewership, as the comedy grew in popularity after its finale, leading to a groundswell of viewers calling for a speedy season 2 renewal. HBO Max renewed Our Flag Means Death in June, and now it looks like the crew is ready to go back to work.

Samba Schutte, who plays Roach on Our Flag Means Death, shares a photo to commemorate the start of season 2 filming. Schutte posted the image, which is a shot of a chair with Roach's name on it, to Twitter. The caption of the photo, along with a few emojis, reads: "Day 1 ahoy."

What To Expect From Our Flag Means Death Season 2

Season 1 wraps up with a major cliffhanger, as Blackbeard steals Stede's ship. He also falls back into his old persona, having had his heart broken by Stede. This ending solidifies the significant Our Flag Means Death true story changes, which alter the real story of Stede and Blackbeard, setting up a potentially significant conflict for the upcoming season. Jenkins, for his part, has teased that Blackbeard finds himself in uncharted emotional waters. There are also questions about the fate of Jim (Vico Ortiz) and if Lucius (Nathan Foad) is still alive after being thrown overboard by Blackbeard. All in all, there will be no shortage of stories and mysteries for the show to dive into when it comes back.

As for when Our Flag Means Death season 2 may release, that remains unclear. It's possible that HBO Max will want to hold firm to the release month of March. But streaming services, though they do sometimes maintain the same release patterns, are less beholden to the same schedules than broadcast networks. It's likely fans will know more about what the future holds for Stede, Blackbeard, Roach, and others as the hit comedy continues its production process.
