Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the HBO show Our Flag Means Death.

Fans are likely rewatching the first season of HBO’s Our Flag Means Death as they eagerly wait for any announcement about a potential renewal. The show has been dubbed one of the most “in demand” series this year (according to Forbes), in large part thanks to its unique brand of comedy that thrusts viewers out into the high seas with a wacky crew.

The well-written pirates often make hilarious mistakes, mostly because of how different their situation has become since Stede Bonnet’s arrival. The clash between the captain’s new ideas as the Gentleman Pirate and what characters like Blackbeard are used to usually result in gut-busting misunderstandings.

The Melon Spoon

When Blackbeard gets his chance at mingling with “the upper crust” for the first time, he begins to gain confidence after they find him surprisingly charming. This turns into overconfidence, however, and he fails to listen to Stede’s warning about them being a fickle crowd.

Everything changes for the pirate come dinnertime, as he’s overwhelmed by the cutlery and is embarrassed in front of everyone. His exasperated line about accidentally using “escargot tongs and a melon spoon to eat a f*****g prawn” tells Stede everything he needs to know. It’s a funny mistake that underscores how different (and silly) the upper class’ practices are.

Massive Aggression

Blackbeard may be incredibly brave in the high seas, but he’s out of his element among the upper crust – this is why he’ll take any opportunity to learn more about them. He’s fascinated by the way they use passive aggression to hurt others, and explains to Stede that crashing a party would be a good excuse to witness “massive aggression” in action.

When Stede quickly corrects him, Blackbeard plays it off as if he had said the right thing in the first place. It’s an underrated throwaway line that highlights Ed’s sillier side.

Putting Teeth Back In

Nat Faxon as The Swede in Our Flag Means Death

The crew put their heads together once they realize that the shortage of oranges on board will affect Swede, who has a bad case of scurvy. Everyone knows it’s serious once his teeth start falling out, but he seems oblivious to the way teeth work, as he says he’s “saving” his teeth so he can “put them back in” eventually.

His horrified reaction to someone correcting him persuades Jim to look for oranges, as Swede practically begs them to “please help” before running around and repeating “the teeth don’t go back in.” Fans likely couldn’t help but feel at least a little sympathetic towards Swede in between bouts of laughter at his comical error.

Going On Vacation

Stede pushing The Revenge on Our Flag Means Death

After Stede accidentally runs the Revenge ashore, he suggests that everyone should treat their period of waiting as a vacation. The pirates, of course, have no idea what that is, a fact that’s perfectly captured by Wee John’s funny response – “what the hell’s a vacation?”

Even after their captain tries his best to explain that they can do what they want with their time, the crew struggles to wrap their heads around the concept. Some ask if there’s a punishment for not having fun, while others like Buttons just fixate on the idea of cannibalization. Frenchie even asks if his vacation “can be torturing the hostages,” which is not exactly what Stede had in mind.

Not All Islanders Are Cannibals

When Stede explores the island they’re stranded on in pursuit of their missing hostages, they’re captured by the locals. They don’t trust “light-skinned folks,” so they keep Stede and Pete imprisoned, but allow Oluwande to eat and drink with their community.

A great example of the show’s use of visual gags happens at one point when Stede asks where their hostages are. The camera pans to slabs of meat being cooked over a fire, much to the captain’s horror, but it’s soon revealed that the British men are just in a cage next to them. The local guard is understandably offended by the awkward misunderstanding, as it was obvious that Stede assumed their group had started cooking the hostages.

Booty For Sale

Captain Stede Bonnet swing his arms around on Our Flag Means Death

Along with one of the most elaborate pirate outfits in OFMD is one of the show’s funniest gags, which happens when Stede arrives in the Republic of Pirates. Lucius already knows there’s trouble ahead when Stede forces him to don a ridiculous ensemble, but it gets worse in the dangerous location when the captain starts yelling “man for sale” in an attempt to sell their hostages.

With phrases like “check out this fabulous booty” and “healthy, sturdy, obedient man for sale,” it’s understandable that Stede doesn’t find the clientele he’s looking for. It becomes even more ridiculous when he argues with Lucius about knowing “a thing or two about salesmanship.”

Cats Are Witches

A memorable moment in the series’ pilot episode happens when Stede asks the crew to tune into their creative side to stitch a new flag for the Revenge. It would be an understatement to say everyone was confused by Frenchie’s flag, as it featured a bizarre cat.

He says in a matter-of-fact way that everyone knows “cats are terrifying” because “they’re witches” and “they’ve got knives in their feet.” It could be a sign of a running gag, since he once again references the joke in front of their British visitors by reminding them that cats “steal children’s breath.”

Bird Magic

Buttons doesn’t have to do much to be considered one of the funniest pirates in OFMD. The eccentric crew member is always doing some odd thing in the background, whether that’s basking in the moonlight or talking to his friend, Karl.

One fascinating thing everyone seems to have gotten wrong is how Buttons actually does seem to be able to talk to the seagull, as his interactions with Karl’s late wife are later shown to be subtitled. There could be actual magic in the series, and it’s hopefully not going to be limited to seagulls.

A Fake Treasure Map

One of the highlights of Stede and Ed’s budding romance takes place after the Gentleman Pirate purchases a treasure map from a scammer. Blackbeard doesn’t want to go on what Stede considers an adventure, as he finds it embarrassing to be seen following a scammer’s map.

Stede’s mistake eventually leads to one of their sweetest scenes in the series so far, as Ed shows his more vulnerable and caring side. They got more than a petrified orange on that day.

The Nose Jar

Stede seems to feel right at home when he walks into Spanish Jackie’s bar, so he confidently chooses “tasty-looking stuff” from Geraldo’s selection. Little does he know that he’s just ordered “juice from the nose jar,” which is exactly what it sounds like.

Apparently, Jackie has been collecting her enemies’ noses for years and stuffing them in that big jar. As if Stede’s mistake of ordering it wasn’t bad enough, he accidentally breaks the entire jar and is almost killed by Jackie herself – she’s understandably not happy that years of hard work have just gone down the drain.
