In case you forgot, or simply erased it from your memory, there is a Ouija movie in development. Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes is helming the project, which based on a Hasbro product.
Pierre Morel (Taken) was in discussion to helm the film, but now two more directors have been added to the list - Sylvain White (The Losers) and Scott Stewart (Legion).
Platinum Dunes has an affinity for tackling movies with an already established fan base. In addition, Michael Bay has a pretty healthy relationship with Hasbro, ever since Transformers turned one of their products into a massive box office hit.
Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis wrote the script for Ouija, which will reportedly be a big-budget action-adventure. The pair also penned Tron: Legacy and were writers on Lost. This won't just be an extension of the scary scene in Paranormal Activity, when a Ouija board is overrun with an evil spirit that sends a threatening message.
Instead, Ouija will get up to $100 million to explore the action and adventure of interactions with a Ouija board. So, will it be like Jumanji? Word on an official director and further plot etails might come in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
I don't want to shun this project completely. It does sound like absurd Hollywood crap. But I wondered why The Social Network was being made and turns out it was my second favorite film of the year. Frankly, if you liked Jumanji, there's no reason to think a Ouija board movie can't work.
Hasbro has a couple of other projects in development. Battleship is currently filming in Baton Rouge, LA and will release May 18th, 2012. Stretch Armstrong has been delayed and may not even begin production until 2013. They better hope Taylor Lautner is still as popular once he moves on from The Twilight Saga.
Ouija is aiming for Thanksgiving 2012 release.
