The upcoming Hogwarts: Legacy game is one of the most hyped upcoming video game releases. The video game will take the player into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, finally giving fans of this incredible universe a chance to explore the world that they have admired from childhood into adulthood.
The release of this game has also led some fans to imagine other incredibly popular movie universes that would make for fantastic open world games. Some of these universes would be so well suited to an open world game that it is shocking they haven’t been made yet.
DC Comics
The world of DC Comics has received its own open world game, of sorts, in the form of DC Universe Online. However, while this was a popular game it is far from the kind of open world game that Hogwarts: Legacy appears to be.
A DC Comics open world game would allow the player to travel between the iconic cities of Gotham, Metropolis, and Central City, potentially even visiting distant locations such as Themyscira and the Watchtower.
Pirates Of The Caribbean
In a similar vein to DC Universe Online, Pirates of the Caribbean did receive its own online video game that allowed players to sail across the ocean, create their own characters, and upgrade their own ship.
However, again, this is an online game that doesn’t quite fit the same open world design of Hogwarts Legacy. It would be great to see an open world game that allowed players to explore the Caribbean with a unique pirate story to experience.
Disney
The many different universes of Disney would allow for one of the most enjoyable video game experiences. While Kingdom Hearts did something similar, it would be incredible to explore more of these universes at the leisure of the player.
The player could jump between several iconic Disney universes, allowing the player to visit Cinderella land or even the world of Mickey Mouse.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the best holiday movies of all time, with the film comfortably working as both a Halloween and a Christmas movie, a niche that is often difficult to fulfill.
While Nightmare Before Christmas certainly fits into the Disney universe, the world of Nightmare Before Christmas is so big that it easily deserves its own game, potentially even expanding on the mythology of the world.
Shrek
Shrek is one of the most popular animated franchises of all time, with the series subverting the expectations of the fairy tale genre and introducing elements that appealed to both adults and children alike.
The world of Shrek is also huge, allowing for an interesting open world game. The game could even subvert expectations in the fantasy game genre, mocking game such as the Elder Scrolls.
Pokémon
Pokémon, as per its nature, is already an open world game. The player is able to traverse across a certain Pokémon region and collect and battle Pokémon along the way. Each game follows a similar story, showing the popularity of the game series.
However, it would be an incredible experience if there was to be a modern Pokémon game that could operate across more than one Pokémon region.
Ghibli
The Studio Ghibli movies are some of the most popular and loved animated movie studios of all time, with the studio being behind the likes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle.
A game has been made by Ghibli before, but it would be incredible for an open world game that allows players to jump between some of the most iconic Ghibli worlds and meet some of the most iconic and legendary Ghibli characters of all time.
Game Of Thrones
Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of all time, with the series remaining one of the most popular TV shows across the 2010s. The series, based on the books by George RR Martin, takes place across two continents (Westeros and Essos), each with a rich and varied geography and history.
While it could prove difficult to create a perfect representation of the World of Ice and Fire in video game form, an open world game could certainly contain the central areas of both Westeros and Essos, giving players a chance to explore the vast history and geography of Martin’s world.
Lord Of The Rings
Lord of the Rings is the gold standard of high fantasy. The series has gone on to inspire and influence almost every piece of western fantasy literature since J.R.R. Tolkien published the series in the mid 20th Century.
While there have been several Lord of the Rings video games, it would be incredible to play a game that allows the player to explore the vast world of Middle Earth, perhaps even in a different age to the Lord of the Rings’ Third Age.
Star Wars
Star Wars is one of the most loved movie franchises of all time, with the series inspiring countless spin off media including comic books, novels, and video games. While some Star Wars video games have been fantastic pieces of media, there is yet to be a true open world Star Wars game.
This would allow the player to explore the Star Wars galaxy and visit some of the most iconic planets that have appeared in the movies.
