Adam Sandler shows his support for comedian Chris Rock after the Will Smith slap incident at the 2022 Academy Awards. Rock, who was presenting an award, made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head; comparing her to the 1997 Demi Moore film G.I Jane. While the joke got laughs initially, Smith soon took to the stage to strike the comedian, before returning to his seat and shouting “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”. Rock was supposedly unaware that Jada’s hairstyle was a result of Alopecia. Smith later won the Best Actor Oscar and tearfully apologized for his violent outburst. While the moment has gone viral, many people feel Smith should’ve been stripped of his award or that he should face consequences for what was, essentially, an assault on live TV.

Sandler, who is famous for his extensive comedy filmography, has a great working relationship with Rock. The two have starred together in several of Sandler’s films; notably the two Grown-Ups movies; which were built around the camaraderie of the close and friendly actors involved. While the care-free star is not usually one to comment on controversial issues, he has always kept a strong circle of fellow comedy-actors as his friends and collaborators.

Now, the actor has taken to Twitter to seemingly voice his support for his friend. Rather than directly reference the actions of Smith, Sandler instead posts a promotional image for Rock’s upcoming stand-up tour Ego Death. Paired with the image is a short message, reading “Can’t wait for this. Love you buddy!”. Rock’s comedy style, which landed him in trouble with the Smiths, has always been unashamedly provocative, and this upcoming tour will likely maintain as such. While the tweet doesn’t overtly mention the Oscars incident that is on everyone’s lips, its timing is a clear indication of Sandler’s continued support and admiration of his friend. The fallout of the Oscars slap continues to dominate showbiz news, with every notable celebrity being asked their opinion on what is being called, by some, the ugliest moment in Oscars history. Smith apologized to Rock in a lengthy statement on social media where he addressed in-depth his violent reaction. It’s also emerged that Rock’s incendiary G.I Jane joke was not in the original script for his well-rehearsed segment, which explains why everyone involved was seemingly unprepared for the altercation.

As the world reacts to the most shocking celeb moment in recent history, there will likely be an element of side-taking among the human beings involved. While many empathise with Smith’s protective outburst, others condemn his violent manner. Rock has had a lot less attention from his peers until now, but its understandable that a close friend like Sandler would stand by and support him. Whether other high-profile stars come to Rock’s defense for his arguably offensive jibe remains to be seen.
