The nominations for the 2023 Oscars have been announced. After last year’s ceremony was plagued by Will Smith storming the stage and slapping presenter Chris Rock, which overshadowed the night’s biggest winners including CODA’s historic Best Picture win, the Oscars are returning for hopefully a controversy-free ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The 95th Academy Awards will honor the year’s best in film, from moving dramas like Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, and the Daniels’ multiverse movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, to the year’s two biggest blockbusters in Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Now, the 2023 Oscars nominations have officially been announced.

The full list of nominations was revealed during a live ceremony from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, hosted by Oscar-nominated actor Riz Ahmed and M3GAN star Allison Williams. See the full list of Oscar nominees below:

Breaking Down The 2023 Oscars Nominations

Oscars fabelmans wakanda forever top gun maverick banshee of inishrin

In terms of total Oscar nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the way with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and several acting categories. The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the Western Front are both close behind with nine nominations each. If total nominations are indicative of who will take home Best Picture, which they sometimes are, these are the three films that should be competing for the night's highest honor, with the Daniels' indie darling the early frontrunner to take home the top prize, especially after winning some important precursor awards.

As expected, it will be a three-way race between Butler, Farrell, and Fraser for Best Actor in a Leading Role. During this award season, Butler and Farrell both won Golden Globes, with Fraser being snubbed, though his acclaimed comeback performance in The Whale could be enough to endear Academy voters for an Oscar win. On the other side, the Actress in a Leading Role race should be just as competitive between Blanchett, Yeoh, and Williams. Though the Tár actress could be considered a slight favorite to win her third Academy Award, Yeoh (who is the first Asian actor ever nominated in the category) should not be overlooked here.

Now that the 2023 Oscars nominations have been announced, there are a wide variety of films represented this year, including a Marvel movie, period dramas, action blockbusters, tragicomedies like Banshees, indies like Triangle of Sadness, and of course the genre-bending film that is Everything Everywhere All at Once. The year's two biggest blockbusters are also represented nicely, with Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water both receiving Best Picture nods. Last year's ceremony brought several surprises, from CODA winning Best Picture to Will Smith winning Best Actor soon after slapping Chris Rock, so expect the unexpected when the 2023 Oscars airs March 12 on ABC.
