The annual Academy Awards ceremony serves as the semi-official conclusion to the movie awards season each year, with the biggest names in Hollywood gathering together to recognize the best of the best in film, from over the proceeding twelve months. 2017 sees the 89th such Oscars event taking place, with late night TV show host Jimmy Kimmel overseeing the event and several of last year's Oscar-winners (including, Best Actress winner Brie Larson and Best Actor winner Leonardo DiCaprio) serving as presenters during the ceremony itself.
Leading into the 89th Annual Academy Award ceremony, the frontrunner for Best Picture - as well as the film with the most Oscar nominations in total - was Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land, with movies such as Barry Jenkins' drama Moonlight and Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi film Arrival following not too far behind. However, Oscar night rarely plays out exactly as most everyone is predicting ahead of time. This, in turn, has fueled speculation about the potential upsets in 2017, be it Denzel Washington landing his third Oscar win instead of Casey Affleck landing a victory in the Best Actor category (for Fences and Manchester by the Sea, respectively) or La La Land falling well short of a sweep at the event and perhaps not even landing the coveted Best Picture title.
While La La Land wound up winning five Oscars in total, Moonlight (following a moment of confusion) was ultimately crowned the Best Picture Oscar-winner of 2017. The latter won three Oscars in total - including for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay - while movies such as Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester by the Sea ended up taking home two Oscars apiece.
