Oscar Isaac is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he’s playing Moon Knight in the TV show of the same name, and he already looks like he’s going to be this universe’s most brutal superhero – here’s why. The MCU keeps expanding, but this time, Marvel is not only paying attention to the movie side of this universe but it’s branching out to the world of streaming with a long list of TV shows, which are set to connect directly to the movies, as opposed to what happened with Netflix’s Marvel shows.

Beginning this new era of content in the MCU was WandaVision, which proved to be a big success, and the MCU already has various TV shows lined up for the near future, covering both previously introduced characters (as happens with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki) and new ones as well. Falling into the latter category is Moon Knight, which will bring Marc Spector to the MCU, and which has found its lead in Oscar Isaac. Moon Knight is expected to be released in 2022 and filming to begin around mid-April, so Isaac and the rest of the crew are getting ready to start shooting, and it’s Isaac’s training that shows the type of character he will be.

The official Instagram page of Mad Gene Media, a production company founded by Isaac and filmmaker Elvira Lind, shared a video of Oscar Isaac’s intense training in preparation for his role in Moon Knight. Although every MCU superhero knows how to fight and they all have their own style, Isaac’s training shows a more brutal and probably violent hero than any other in the MCU. Isaac is shown throwing punches, stabbing, and finishing his opponents with hits to the head and more, reminiscent of the styles of characters like Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and even Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, but more aggressive than them.

Marc Spector/Moon Knight is a former boxer, Marine, CIA operative, and mercenary who was betrayed by his employer and left to die. Spector was approached by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, who offered him a second chance at life if he became his avatar on Earth, which Spector accepted, thus resurrecting and gaining superhuman abilities. Spector later invested the money he made as a mercenary to make a fortune and took the mantle of “Moon Knight”, but he also came up with different identities to distance himself from his past as a mercenary. This “millionaire with various gadgets and expert detective” part of his story has drawn comparisons to DC Comics’ Batman, but there are obviously some big differences, mainly Spector’s many identities and that he has superpowers.

It’s that mercenary, boxer, Marine, etc part of Moon Knight’s backstory which requires that the character has a different, more aggressive combat style than those of other MCU characters. Just by looking at Oscar Isaac’s training for Moon Knight, fans can get an idea of the tone of the character and the series, and should get ready for the MCU’s most brutal superhero to date.
