In The Originals season 2 premiere Hayley struggled to adapt to her new hybrid form while grieving over giving her daughter Hope away. To say that The Originals’ werewolf queen Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin) had an eventful pregnancy with baby Hope is putting it mildly. As if the pressure of birthing the world’s first witch-werewolf-vampire tribrid wasn’t enough, Hayley also had to deal with a coven of witches hellbent on killing her and her unborn child who – it soon turned out – were acting on the instruction of Hope’s grandmother Esther.

Even after giving birth in The Originals season 1 finale – while kidnapped by the coven, no less – things didn’t let up for Hayley. Soon after holding Hope for the first time, evil witch Monique Deveraux (Yasmine Al-Bustami) killed Hayley before making off with the newborn. Luckily, as Hayley died with Hope’s tribrid blood in her system, she was able to cheat death, but on the downside, Hope’s blood also caused Hayley to transition into a werewolf-vampire hybrid. Not to mention that while Hayley managed to save Hope before the coven sacrificed her, she soon had to fake the baby’s death and send her to live with her aunt Rebekah (Claire Holt) for her own safety.

It’s no wonder that Hayley was struggling to cope in The Originals season 2 episode 1. Titled “Rebirth,” the season 2 premiere saw Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and Hayley lead an attack against the Guerrera werewolf family and their allies. The ambush allowed Hayley to exact revenge on their leader Francesca (Peta Sergeant) for colluding with the coven that was responsible for her hybrid transition and Hope nearly being killed.

But even after killing Francesca, Hayley didn’t feel any better in The Originals season 2 episode 1. Despite Francesca’s sins, Hayley felt pretty disgusted with herself for killing a bunch of fellow werewolves and even more so that she fed on Francesca’s blood vampire-style. She was so enraged and confused by both her new hybrid status and being separated from her daughter that she trashed Hope’s nursery, and later admitted to Elijah she missed the purity and nobility of being a werewolf.

Hayley was also struggling with her newfound immortality as a hybrid in The Originals season 2 episode 1 and confessed to Klaus she couldn’t imagine spending an eternity feeling the way she did. But with a little pep talk from Klaus that they would regain control of New Orleans and be reunited with their daughter Hope in good time, Hayley started feeling a tad more optimistic about her future.
