Five years have passed since Pretty Little Liars last aired, and a new spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, is billed to join the Pretty Little Liars universe this summer. This is not the first time that Pretty Little Liars would get a spinoff, as there have been two short-lived attempts to continue the give the show a reboot in the past, through Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionist. Despite Pretty Little Liars’ success, both shows were unsuccessful and were each canceled after one season.

The original Pretty Little Liars story followed a group of high schoolers in Rosewood, who tried to uncover the mystery of their friend’s sudden disappearance, and the identity of an anonymous stalker, “A,” hounding them, threatening to reveal their darkest secrets. The Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin spinoff will echo this storyline, following a new set of teenagers, in a different city, this time trying to solve the mystery of a high schooler’s death. While the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin introduces a new “A,” the anonymous villain in the original Pretty Little Liars, none of the original cast members is billed to appear.

The upcoming Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin spinoff is an HBO Max production, unlike the parent show that aired on ABC/Freeform for its successful seven-year run. This HBO Max connection may be the deciding factor that will make this spinoff different and more successful than its two preceding unsuccessful spinoffs. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will explore more scandals, mystery, and murder than the parent show, with the new cast paying for the secret sins of their parents, the original Pretty Little Liars characters - a premise that potentially allows them to up the tension and intensity of the spinoff itself.

What Being On HBO Max Means For Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin

A from Pretty Little Liars Original Sin

HBO Max is known for the creative freedom it grants its shows, allowing them to explore mature content like in Euphoria and Game of Thrones. There are usually no holds barred with HBO shows, and it is unexpected that Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will be any different, as the showrunners have promised to explore more horror, mature content, and torment for its core characters. To wit, HBO Max recently dropped a Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin teaser, which featured a hooded figure ripping up pictures of a high school clique amid scary piano notes playing in the background.

If the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin trailer is anything to go by, it can be expected that the HBO Max Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin spinoff will be a gripping watch with a more intimidating mystery character than its parent show. It is also undeniable that the HBO name is bigger than ABC/Freeform, which will translate to more views for the upcoming Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin spinoff. Based on this, there are a lot of opportunities for Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin to do better than the preceding spinoffs.
