Orange is the New Black has been a staple of Netflix's original programming lineup ever since it first premiered back in 2013. Coming from Weeds creator, Jenji Kohan, and based on the real-life story of Piper Kerman, the series made a name for itself through its unusual style of storytelling and large cast of mostly female characters. Thanks to an equally impressive lineup of actors giving stellar performances in their roles, and Orange is the New Black has somehow managed to make the continued lives of a group of inmates at a women's prison continually exciting and enthralling, very rarely falling into the lulls that a lesser series might with that premise.

The show's fourth season fundamentally changed the prison's dynamic and the lives of its characters, with the shocking death of a beloved character propelling the series forward into a finale episode that was just as much emotional as it was game-changing. The wait for the show's follow-up fifth season has felt especially long because of that very reason for fans, but they can now rest easy knowing just how much time is left before they can see what happens next.

Netflix has officially released the first teaser trailer for Orange is the New Black's fifth season. Despite being comprised of just a few, quick shots of the show's more notable characters, the teaser itself continues to hammer home just how much will be different when Orange is the New Black returns. And most importantly, the video ends with the announcement that the fifth season will premiere on the streaming service on June 9th.

Following the tragic death of Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) in the penultimate episode, the show's fourth season ended on one of its biggest cliffhangers to date, as all of the prisoners began revolting against the guards. The final image of Dayanara (Dascha Polanco) holding a gun to one of the guard's heads, as the rest of the inmates cheered her on was one that the series had been building towards all season, despite feeling completely unexpected when it happened. While the season ended before revealing whether or not Dayanara pulled the trigger, the message was clear: things were never going to be the same in Litchfield.

Combining Dayanara's dilemma with the ever-changing dynamics between the rest of the prisoners, and Orange is the New Black has plenty of material to mine through when it returns. Not to mention the effects that Poussey's death will likely continue to have, on Tasty and the rest of her close friends. Luckily, the June 9th premiere date fits in line with the rest of the season premieres so far, which means viewers can rest easy knowing they won't have to wait longer than usual for Orange is the New Black to come back... Even if there is still four months left between now and then.
