After three triumphant seasons, Orange is the New Black has firmly cemented itself as one of the jewels in Netflix's original programming crown. Though initially drawn in by the tale of the privileged white girl, Piper (Taylor Schilling), being sentenced to time in Litchfield Women's Prison, we soon became hooked on the tales of all the women in said prison.
A diverse cast on a show filled with diverse storylines, Orange is the New Black has consistently delivered great drama, but its dark comedy has always stood out. With the arrival of season four nearly upon us though, it seems as though the Litchfield Ladies might have lost their sense of humor. A new trailer for the season has landed online and can be viewed, above.
At the end of season three, the future of Litchfield's inmates looked gloomy after the MCC decided to double their quota of inmates. While nearly every inmate was busy making a bid for freedom and frolicking in the lake, the guards were busy cramming more bunks into already crowded cells. From the looks of the trailer, it seems as though the pressure of these new living arrangements are getting to everyone. Piper says she feels "unsafe," though since she moans about everything that's hardly a surprise. Meanwhile, as Gloria tells us,"It's sardine time." Litchfield is a for-profit prison, meaning one hundred new inmates adding pressure to the already stretched prison services. Living in such close quarters inevitably produces a lot of tension, and it seems as though plenty of disagreements are brewing, setting up for a season full of explosive drama.
Elsewhere, the few moments of humor we do get from this trailer are wonderfully supplied by Danielle Brooks as 'Taystee' Jefferson, who is still eagerly trying to demonstrate her employability ready for when she is eventually released. The distraction of an 'office job' doesn't stop her from reminding the new inmates who's in charge, though.
The return of Orange is the New Black is highly anticipated by fans of the show. Though season three did not match the high of season two, it was still a really good show which left us with many questions moving into season four. Will Sophia return from Shu? Will Alex get the better of the hitman guard? Will Piper stop being mean and grumpy? And with 100 new inmates supposedly arriving, just how big can this cast get?
Orange is the New Black season 4 premieres on Netflix on June 17th, 2016.
