At the stroke of midnight (pacific time) tonight, Netflix will unveil its new season for one of its first breakout hits, Orange is the New Black. The last thing the service wants to do is go into the evening cold, and that’s why it has released an all new trailer for the upcoming season.
While Netflix has been heavily marketing the new season of Orange is the New Black online, this is actually the first trailer that reveals one of the biggest plot points that will affect the prison in the upcoming season. Just how major a plot point is this, exactly? So major that, depending on how it plays out, it could leave the show in the kind of shape that will leave many wondering where it has left to go when all is said and done.
As teased in the video, in the new season, Litchfield will face a major crisis under its new leadership when word comes down that the government has decided to close the camp for good. This puts the administration in a crisis mode as it works to find a solution to its new found problem. Without divulging any spoilers, it can be said that one of the answers they come up with completely changes the system that’s currently in place for the existing inmates. In fact, the end of episode six (which was the last one journalists were given access to) is actually where things really start to get moving as well as being the place where the first real “oh hell yeah” moment occurs.
The biggest problem Orange is the New Black is facing this year is its restructuring of focus. As previously discussed, the show’s attention is going to be leaving Piper this year in order to put the spotlight on some of the population’s more 'interesting' characters. So, despite what this trailer and its opening monologue may have you believe, understand that the new set of episodes is in no way The Piper Show. It’s going to take some getting used to, but what the end of episode six promises for the back half of the season is something that could really take this show to new heights if done right.
Season three is going to be a make or break moment for Orange is the New Black. It’s going to be the season that either proves its ability to evolve, or its inability to grow – which will ultimately result in the show simply eating itself. With any luck, it will be the former because, after the amazing first year and (at times) enjoyable second year, we really want to believe season three is capable of pulling off some truly great things.
Orange is the New Black season three premieres tomorrow on Netflix.
