An explosive new Oppenheimer trailer has dropped. The Christopher Nolan film, which is based on the 2005 Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin book American Prometheus, stars frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who was key to the Manhattan Project's development of the atomic bomb. The film's huge ensemble cast also includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh.
This weekend, Universal Pictures released a brand-new trailer for the Oppenheimer movie, attached to the theatrical release of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it has now been released online.
The new trailer offers prospective viewers a better sense of the film's story, which appears to document Oppenheimer's uphill battle to spearhead the creation of the Atom Bomb and build the required team of scientists. Also included are several new shots of the movie's expansive cast, with Damon's Leslie Groves in particular occupying a prominent role in the footage.
Everything Revealed By The New Oppenheimer Trailer
While the previous Oppenheimer trailer highlighted the spectacle typical of Nolan's movies, this new promo is much more focused on story and character. Murphy and Damon take center-stage as driving forces behind the Manhattan Project, which is repeatedly positioned as having the potential to end WWII once and for all. However, the characters also outline the significant challenges they must overcome to assemble the scientific minds needed to invent the weapon fast enough.
Murphy's protagonist seems driven and unwavering in his mission, but the Oppenheimer trailer is also filled with warnings. Benny Safdie and Kenneth Branagh's scientists both have lines that foreshadow the atomic bomb will not bring the peace Oppenheimer expects. Quick shots of Tom Conti as Albert Einstein sporting a very sullen expression seem to prefigure the regret over his involvement in kick-starting the Manhattan Project that he would express later in life.
Additionally, by showing so much of the illustrious Oppenheimer cast, this trailer suggests Nolan's movie won't neglect the title character's personal relationships. Blunt's Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer, in particular, looks set for a strong presence, though some shots of Murphy with Damon, Branagh, and Florence Pugh seem fairly emotionally charged as well. All in all, Nolan's first stab at a biopic promises both epic scale and personal intimacy, which should excite all admirers of his work.
