Meryl Streep is confirmed to have joined the cast for Only Murders in the Building season 3. Starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, the mystery comedy-drama series tells the stories of three strangers who live in a New York City apartment building. After bonding over their shared love for true-crime podcasts, they begin their own podcast as they solve a murder that happened in their very own building. Both seasons 1 and 2 of the Hulu series have been critically acclaimed, particularly for the performances and shared chemistry between Martin, Short, and Gomez. While they are the stars of the series, plenty of other famous faces have appeared throughout the show, including Tina Fey, Sting, Cara Delevingne, Amy Schumer, and Paul Rudd.

Thanks to a behind-the-scenes video that Selena Gomez shared on her Instagram, fans now know that Meryl Streep is the latest addition to the star-studded cast for Only Murders in the Building season 3.

The video begins by showing the three leads on set, with Gomez confirming that filming is underway. She asks if it could get any better, before panning to Only Murders in the Building newcomer Paul Rudd, who made his series debut in the closing moments of the season 2 finale. Rudd suggests that it could get a little bit better, which leads to Meryl Streep emerging from behind a couch as she graciously asks her cast members if they need anything.

Everything We Know About Only Murders In The Building Season 3

Based on how Only Murders in the Building season 2 ended, Meryl Streep is joining the show at an exciting point and game-changing shift in the story. Season 2 ended with a one-year time jump, with Rudd's character revealed to be an actor named Ben Glenroy in a play directed by Short's character Oliver. In the moments before opening night of the play begins, there is tension between Ben and his co-star (Martin's Charles Haden-Savage) and an ominous exchange between them. Shortly after making his stage entrance, Ben collapses and dies. Unlike the murders in the previous seasons, Charles, Oliver, and Gomez's character Mabel Mora will have to solve their first murder outside of their apartment building.

Along with the series leads Martin, Short, and Gomez, Rudd is confirmed to be returning in season 3 as Ben. The source of the tension and the ominous conversation between Ben and Charles will have to be revealed, particularly with what Charles meant when he said to Ben "Stay away from her" and "I know what you did." Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams will also be joining the cast as a documentarian who takes interest in a case that is important to season 3. As for a release date, it has not been confirmed at this time, though with season 1 airing in 2021, season 2 airing in 2022, and filming already underway, season 3 will likely premiere on Hulu during 2023.

In terms of how Streep fits into all of this, it is too early to tell. It is possible that her new character could be the "her" that Charles tells Ben to stay away from in the season 2 finale, but regardless of what her role is, it will be incredible to see her interacting with Martin, Short, Gomez, Rudd, and the rest of the star-studded cast. Only Murders in the Building season 3 was renewed before season 2 was even released, as the show continues to raise the bar in each season. Streep's Only Murders in the Building casting proves that the show is not slowing down any time soon.
