Steve Martin, creator and star of Only Murders in the Building has revealed that filming for season 2 is underway. Only Murders in the Building season 1 premiered on Hulu on August 31, 2021. It has since become the most-watched comedy premiere in Hulu history, speaking to the massive success of the new comedy show.
Only Murders in the Building stars Martin (Charles-Haden Savage), fellow co-creator Martin Short (Oliver Putnam), and singer/actress Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora). Season 1 follows the trio as they create a podcast investigating the murder of one of their neighbours. Only Murders in the Building season 1 was confirmed in September of this year. After solving the murder of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), season 2 is set up for a new murder mystery to be investigated. Season 1 ended with the three main characters being arrested for the murder of Bunny, their landlord, with Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) seemingly investigating their case for her newest podcast.
Fans of Only Murders in the Building were delighted by the news of Only Murders in the Building season 2 filming less than two months after the season 1 finale. Martin shared a photo via Twitter, appearing to be on set, of himself and his co-stars announcing the first day back shooting the series. After leaving off on a cliff-hanger, many were happy to find out that Only Murders in the Building would return to continue its story. Season 1 had an impressive reception, managing to gain a 100% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 94% approval from audiences. News about season 2 keeps coming, too, as Cara Delevingne was recently added to the cast as Alice, described as “a sophisticated art world insider who becomes embroiled in the murder mystery.”
Alongside Delevinge's season 2 casting, several familiar characters will likely return, including Fey’s and other neighbors staying in the building. While there is no set date for the return of Only Murders in the Building, with the extreme excitement and support surrounding season 1, it’s no surprise that season 2 is getting such a speedy development. It’s rumoured that the series will return around mid-2022 based on its season 1 production schedule. Only Murders in the Building season 1 started filming in December 2020, finishing production in April 2021, and later premiered on Hulu on August 3. So, as filming has already begun, it’s likely that fans won’t have to wait long for the series to return to their screens to watch a new mystery unfold.
