Elle reports from a fan premiere with co-creator John Hoffman, Only Murders In The Building season 2 is set to start filming next month. Hoffman says season two is right on track after being worked on for a few months. The essential part of creating this show, which has a central mystery, according to Hoffman, is working backwards from the solution and muddying up the clues. With the script underway and the cast preparing, the second season seems to be right on track for a 2022 release baring any complications with the ongoing pandemic. Read Hoffman’s full comments below.

“We do have a good solid track for season 2. We actually start shooting in a month. It's going to be very exciting as the actors start arriving and everything else. We have been working with the writers for a few months now. With this show, you have to sort of build the mystery backwards to forward and twist our way to the resolve. So you have to know everything at the end first and hide things and twist your way there. That's what we've been doing, and now we're speeding our way through the scripts, and we're about halfway through.”

Hoffman discusses the potential for the second season, saying that season one was very focused on the inside of the Acronia and season two, and any further seasons, would be expanding their stories and their podcast into the city. The final episode of the season, titled "Open and Shut," left many unanswered questions for Only Murders fans while still following through on the promise of the show's premiere. Mabel being caught with another dead body and the team being walked out of the Arconia in hand cuffs shows just how much there is left to be explored in the Arconia.

Only Murders In The Building is a brilliant show that capitalizes on the current cultural interest in true crime and true crime podcasts in a clever and funny way. Steve Martin’s work in this series demonstrates he and Hoffman truly know how to balance comedy with the serious tones of murder mysteries, and is an excellent return to acting for Martin after he left the limelight over a decade ago.  Season one set a standard for the series season two will hopefully live up to.
