The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 and the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R make up the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 series, but what's the difference between the two earbuds? OnePlus products with an 'R' or 'CE' in their names tend to be more affordable versions of other products. For example, the OnePlus 11R is the more affordable version of the OnePlus 11, while the Nord Buds CE are a cheaper alternative to the Nord Buds. Expectedly, the lower price tag comes with some tradeoffs.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2R are cheaper than the OnePlus Buds Pro 2, but the price tag isn't the only difference between them. OnePlus has removed two key features from the OnePlus Buds Pro 2. For starters, while the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R do support spatial audio, they do not come with head tracking. According to OnePlus, spatial audio on the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R is fixed. What this means is that when users of the Buds Pro 2R turn their heads with spatial audio activated, the sound field doesn't change to compensate for the shift in position.

Another key difference between the two pairs of earbuds is the lack of wireless charging support on the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R. Unlike the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 which support both USB-C and Qi wireless charging, those who pick up the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R will have to make do with just wired charging. However, both earbuds support fast wired charging – a 10-minute charge of the charging case with earbuds inside provides 10 hours of total use, while placing the earbuds inside the charging case provides three hours of playback (with ANC off).

Both earbuds have most other features common, including support for ANC, a transparency mode, support for LHDC 5.0, Google Fast Pair, Bluetooth 5.3, and a battery life of up to 39 hours in total. The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 and Buds Pro 2R are both compatible with Android and iOS devices. Additionally, they both feature an IP55 water-resistance rating on the earbuds, and an IPX4 rating for the case.

The OnePlus Buds 2 Pro are available in Arbor Green and Obsidian Black, while the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R can be purchased in Obsidian Black or Misty White. There is a possibility OnePlus may add a new color in the future just like it did with the OnePlus buds Pro. For now, the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R are only available in India, and they are priced at around $121. Those in the U.S. can pick up the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 for $179. The main differences between the two earbuds come down to lack of head tracking spatial audio and wireless charging on the OnePlus Buds Pro 2R, so if these features are important, buyers might want to shell out extra for the OnePlus Buds Pro 2.
