OnePlus recently announced the OnePlus 8T for $749. The smartphone is a follow up to the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, which were released earlier this year. The OnePlus 8T continues to deliver on OnePlus' belief of providing top-notch specifications at an affordable price. But now that the flagship OnePlus 8 Pro has decreased to $799, which device is the better value?

The 8T and 8Pro each feature a 120Hz refresh AMOLED display, which means both devices have vivid color and super smooth motions and transitions. However, the OnePlus 8 pro has a 6.78-inch screen where the OnePlus 8T has a slightly smaller 6.55-inch screen. The OnePlus 8 Pro's screen also has curved sides for the optimal video viewing experience. The OnePlus 8T's screen is a regular flat design.

An important addition to the OnePlus 8 Pro is an IP68 rating, indicating good dust and water resistance. To date, the OnePlus 8 Pro remains the only model in OnePlus' lineup to offer an official IP rating. Battery life is also a big deal for smartphones, of course, and the OnePlus 8T and 8 Pro are equipped with large 4,500mAh and 4,510mAh batteries, respectively, with both featuring OnePlus' "Warp Charge" fast-charging technology. The OnePlus 8T includes the ultra-fast Warp Charge 65, which gives users a day's worth of power in 15 minutes. However, the OnePlus 8 Pro can be charged to 50% in 23 minutes with Warp Charge 30 and is wireless-charging compatible. The OnePlus 8 Pro works with any wireless charger, but purchasing the OnePlus Warp Charge 30 Wireless Charger will give the device 50% of battery in 30 minutes.

Performance & Camera

The OnePlus 8T and 8 Pro are both powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor to ensure peak performance and, while the OnePlus 8T comes with the brand new OxygenOS 11, the OnePlus 8 Pro can be easily upgraded to it. The 8T also has higher specs with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage compared to the OnePlus 8 Pro's 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The OnePlus 8 Pro offers a better camera experience as it features two 48MP wide and ultra-wide lenses, an 8MP telephoto lens for optical zoom, and a 5MP color filter lens. The OnePlus 8T has a 48MP wide, a 16MP ultra-wide, a 5MP macro, and a 2MP monochrome lens. Both devices have a 16MP front camera.

Overall, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a better value in 2020. Paying the extra $50 will give consumes the IP68 rating and wireless charging features that are present in other flagship smartphones. The OnePlus 8T does have more RAM and storage, but that is the reason for the $749 price. An OnePlus 8T version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage would be priced closer to the regular OnePlus 8.
